Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This nonfiction text in the "Amazing Animals" series begins with the story of a baby monkey and his new life with his mother. We find out how the baby monkey learns and matures until he is able to be on his own. Photographs of all kinds of monkeys in action in their environment skillfully enhance the text. Some unusual photos of the monkeys such as the red face of a bald uakari are interesting surprises. A chapter about the body of a monkey contains information about its physical characteristics and abilities. Sidebars throughout the text have details such as the fact that squirrel monkeys can see in color so they are able to find fresh fruits. There are brief descriptions of the different kinds of monkeys such as the Japanese macaque and the patas monkey. A full-page map illustrates where the New World and Old World monkeys live and several short chapters tell about how they live and their place in the world. The text includes a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. There is also a 10-question quiz and a page that lists related books and websites. Children who are curious about monkeys will enjoy this book, and it is also a good resource for research purposes. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
