Title: 'Monroe' tells story in words, pictures

Marcia McCartt's passion for history and sense of community have encouraged her to write her first published book about the city of Monroe.
The Monroe resident, historian and author has written "Monroe," a pictorial book about the history of the community for Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series.
The 128-page softcover book, which is to hit the bookstores today, Feb. 2, features the small town's history to the 1850s in more than 200 black-and-white images and a historical narrative, the publisher said.
A portion of the profits from the book, which retails for $21.99, will be donated to the Monroe Historical Society, which McCartt joined in 2004.
McCartt, 48, who was recently hired as a substitute instructional aide for Lakota Local Schools, said she had been thinking of writing a book about the history of Monroe for a few years.
"It wasn't until I found a publisher for it that I kind of got it going and that was about a year ago," she said.
Initially, she said what inspired her was a tornado that touched down in 1969.
"A lot of people are getting old and the stories are going to be gone," she said of the event that united the community. "And, the tornado ... hit my house so that ... was close to my heart a little bit."
It took McCartt, who finished in September, five months to write the book.
Highlights include:
? The 1969 tornado whose aftermath united the community.
? Parades and festivals of the past.
? Information about the home-grown talent such as the city's founder, Nathaniel Sackett, author Merle Constiner and country music guitarist Matt Basford.
? Monroe's churches and schools.
Most of the book's images came from members of the city's historical society or private collections of residents, she said.
McCartt hopes residents who read the book will "walk away with a good sense of community and a sense of pride in our community and high hopes for the future."
The book is available at area bookstores, independent retailers, online retailers and through Arcadia Publishing at (888) 313-2665 or visit the Web site at www.arcadiapublishing.com.

Marcia McCartt is a historian and genealogist. She currently lives in Monroe and is a former trustee for the Christian Waldschmidt Homestead and former chair of the advisory board to Camp Dennison Civil War Museum. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her love for genealogy and the city of Monroe is what inspired her to write her first book.
Monroe was platted in 1817 by John H. Piatt and Nathanial Sackett. John H. Piatt was a merchant of Cincinnati and during the War of 1812 he was the largest army contractor in the west.
Along with the book signing the historical society will feature several photos, an array of clothing, some small tools and a Paragon Plow that was manufactured in the community. The Paragon Plow Works was owned by Charles Warner. The business was started in 1859, and some years later he invented the Paragon Plow. It was the only ploy of the type in the country.
McCratt's book can be purchased for $21.99 at area book stores or from Arcadia Publishing's Images.
