Monster '83-'84 Hits

This budget-priced two-CD set draws upon the vaults of Sony Music for recordings that were in the pop charts in 1983 and 1984 as released either on Columbia records or sister label Epic records, or its various subsidiaries (Pasha, Jet, etc.). Most major artists who recorded for these labels and scored hits on them, such as Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen, are excluded, no doubt because of coupling restrictions in their contracts or other reasons. (McCartney took his catalog with him when he moved back to EMI.) Curiously, there are other missing names you might have thought would be included, acts like Eddy Grant, Culture Club, Marvin Gaye, the Clash, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, and Scandal. And even when a major artist of the period is included, sometimes the track selected is surprising. Cyndi Lauper's "All Through the Night" was a Top Five hit, but it was actually the least successful of her four singles that peaked in the charts in 1983-1984. All 20 of the featured songs did make the charts, however, with the technical exception of Nena's "99 Red Balloons." (It was the German-language version of the song, "99 Luftballoons," that was the hit.) Five were gold records, and one, Deniece Williams' chart-topping "Let's Hear It for the Boys" from the movie Footloose, went platinum. Though the primary style is mainstream pop
ock, there are R&B crossovers such as Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fall in Love With Me" and Luther Vandross' medley of "Superstar" and "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)." There are also hints of the lingering influence of new wave rock in the songs by Adam Ant, Men at Work, and the Psychedelic Furs. But the presence of three Toto songs signals the discs' dominant style.
