Overview

Worlds of wonder and awe await you in The Monster-Maker and Other Science Fiction Classics, a century spanning collection of speculative of extravaganzas that show both the light and dark sides of science fiction. Featuring work by the best and brightest writers of science fiction in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the nineteen tales collected in this volume imaginatively extrapolate ideas and concepts that have become staples of the literature: extraterrestrial invasion, artificial life, time travel, ingenious experiments with unpredictable consequences, exploration of alien worlds, and marvelous inventions and their uses.

In addition to the full-length novel "At the Earth's Core," by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this book includes contributions by H.P. Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, A. Merritt, Franz Kafka, W.C. Morrow, Arthur Conan Doyle, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Jack London, and others. The Monster-Maker and Other Science Fiction Classics is your vehicle for exploring scientific illuminations from the past that reflect futures yet to come.

Great fun if you enjoy classic horror and science fiction stories! Michael Kelahan's compilations of early horror stories ("The Monster Maker and other Science Fiction Classics", "The Body Snatcher and other Classic Ghost Stories", and "M is for Monster", "The Screaming Skull and other Classic Horror Stories", and others) are excellent, with very very few (if any) dull or poor stories and some great introductions providing backgrounds and context for the stories and their authors. Most of these stories are from the late 1800's to the early 20th century, yet many still pack a punch even for today's jaded audiences. With stories from the likes of well-known masters of this sort of fiction such as H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, H.G. Wells, Jules Vern, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sirt Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Allen Poe, Franz Kafka, Ambrose Bierce, M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, Mary Shelley, and Brahm Stoker, many of these stories will appear like welcome visits from old friends to fans of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and it's hard to go wrong with these obvious choices. Some stories will be familiar to viewers of classic science fiction or horror movies and anthology television shows like the Twilight Zone or Thriller. In addition to the familiar, though, there are enough of the more obscure stories of comparable quality from lesser-known writers to bring a few surprises for even the most experienced of classic weird fiction fans. Michael Kelahan's comments and contributions are nice additions to the great selections of classic stories, and I hope to see other collections like these from the same editor!
