The first time I saw the cover and read the blurb I knew I was going to read this. I had such high hopes for it and I'm glad to say that it did not disappoint. This is truly a magnificent read.  Kymera was such an amazing character. She may be "Monstrous" but she had a true heart of gold. She is strong, brave yet so naive and innocent as well. She was told by her father that he created her using science to help save the girls from the evil Wizard. The girls are being held in a prison by the Wizard and it's Kyms job to enter the city at night and steal away a girl. She then has to bring the girl home and her father will cure the girl and send her to a paradise.  Despite Kym knowing she has to hide from the humans, because as her father tells her they wont understand her, they will think she is inhuman and unnatural, Kym is so full of curiosity that she takes her time and studies Bryre every night. On night she ends up meeting Ren, she makes sure every part of her "Monstrous" side is hid and ends up talking to him. She is hesitant at first but eventually she looks forward to their meetings. She knows that she can't show Ren her wings, tail nor different coloured skin but she longs for him to truly know her.  As I said, I absolutely loved Kym. My heart broke for her so many many times because she was so lonely but I adored her plucky spirit. She learns some harsh truths yet she will do what she can to do the right thing. I also loved her relationship with Ren. The fact that she found a friend was special and I was so happy for her. I enjoyed seeing the friendship grow.  This is the authors debut novel and honestly, it's right up there with my favourite reads. It's dark with a real old style FairyTale vibe and one that will suck you right in. The story is shrouded in mystery and has such an emotional feel. It's kind of like, don't judge a book by it's cover because everyone who see's Kyms' real form are immediately frightened  but underneath she is such a sweetheart.  Anyway, Monstrous is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish it. It's well written, with amazing characters and a truly magnificent read. It's emotional and heartbreaking yet you find yourself smiling a lot. It will pull you in, twist you around and spit you out again and again. I cried, I cried some more and I cried even more!!  I can't say too much about the plot because so much happens, so much death, so much sadness that I'm sure to spoil something but I will say that while some things are predictable, there are others that will leave you reeling. So overall, I guess you can see that I loved this book. It's truly and amazing and exquisite read. Highly highly recommend.

Monstrous is a magical and enticing tale that completely sucked me in. I was swept away by the Frankenstein-esque dark themes and Connolly’s enchanting writing. She perfectly crafted a story and fantastic world that I could not get enough of. The story is INCREDIBLE. It’s imaginative, clever, and so well developed. The story reminded me of Hermione’s Undetectable Extension Charm* (Capacious extremis)- at first the plot seems simple and repetitious on the surface but as you read on you find the plot is full of unsuspecting depth. Upon finishing this book, if you think back to the beginning in comparison to where it ended, it’ll blow your mind. This novel was packed with adventure. While the story contains scenes of repetition, Connolly has an indisputable knack for keeping it interesting and engaging. My attention didn’t waver for a second! What I really loved about Monstrous, is the message that you walk away with. Kymera on the surface resembles a monster – she has wings, bolts in her neck, and a long spiky tail – but her heart is pure and full of love. The message here is to not judge a person by their exterior. It’s a wonderful message and I think all ages can benefit from the friendly reminder. I loved all these characters so very much – they were all so well developed and they all played a very important part in the story. My favorite is Kymera, hands down. She reminded me so much of Sally from NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. She was a passionate, caring, and all around selfless character and I really connected with her. I highly recommend this book for all ages! It contains dark themes relating closely to Frankenstein and The Brothers Grimm. A fantastic plot that carries unsuspecting depth to excite and entice. Characters that will climb (or fly) their way into your heart. Most importantly, a strong and lasting memory to carry with you day in and day out. A fantastic read for all! I gave Monstrous 5/5 stars. *If you are not familiar with the series HARRY POTTER, the Undetectable Extension Charm is a charm that simultaneously makes things bigger on the inside while magically disguising this effect. (See Also: Tardis from British TV series DOCTOR WHO.)

4.5 stars overall! The city of Bryne is being tormented by an evil wizard. A curse is released and little girls are disappearing. No one is safe and many precautions are taken place. However, there is one person who can save these girls. Kymera walks the streets at night but needs to be careful not to be seen by humans. Because Kym is comprised of different animal parts such as a spiky tail, cat eyes, claws and wings like a patchwork Frankenstein girl, she needs to be cautious since others will not understand her. Because she was close to death, Kym is given a second chance to live and to help save the world. However, a human boy sees Kym at the dead of night. Kym becomes friends with Ren and finds out that Ren knows information about what is happening to the girls and about the evil wizard. Monstrous is such a cute coming-of-age Middle Grade novel. The world building is enchanting and MarcyKate Connolly's writing transports the reader to a magical world where Kym is created for a sole mission. Her father tells that in her new life, she has a mission to save girls from a evil wizard who is hunting down the children. Kym is strong, curious and clever. She doesn't remember too much of her past life and is searching for her identity. She is longing for freedom but she knows she has a mission to pursue. Kym is loyal and is such a giving little girl despite her monstrous looks. The storytelling of the novel is whimsical yet quite dark. What I like about the novel is how Connolly weaves in the theme of self-acceptance. It is important for young readers to understand that it's okay to be different and that everyone is unique. And because someone is different, they can still make friends. Accepting oneself is important especially when living in a society that has certain standards of what makes a perfect person. I highly recommend this novel for readers who love dark fantasy and retellings. If you enjoy reading Frankenstein and Brothers Grimm tales, definitely check out Monstrous. Also, make sure to check out Connolly's next book, Ravenous.
