Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- In both of these books, geography, history, and natural history are conveyed in a simple and interesting way. Brown entices readers with a sec: tion of trivia mentioning the world's largest gold reserve at Fort Knox, the moonbow at Cumberland Falls, and the world's first cheeseburger served in Louisville in 1934. Eight well-illustrated pages discuss problems with surface mining and reclamation. The famous people section adds Jim Varney, Muhammad Ali, and George Ella Lyon to the usual historical heavyweights. Although most Kentuckians would identify one of the figures on their flag as a statesman rather than a ``politician,'' the book as a whole gives a strong, balanced presentation. Montana has interesting historical photographs of raw towns, cowboys, and encamped Indians. Full-color photographs reveal stunning landscapes. Three frontier women of contrasting backgrounds are honored for their contributions. The environmental protection chapter discusses the problems of open-pit mining and reclamation and features an excellent color drawing explaining heap leaching. Smaller and friendlier in format, and therefore less detailed than either the ``America the Beautiful'' or the ``Enchantment of America'' series (both Childrens), these titles will be a boon for younger readers.-- Cindy Darling Codell, Clark Middle School, Winchester, KY
