Moondog Matinee

The Band essentially went back to being the Hawks of the late '50s and early '60s on this album of cover tunes. They demonstrated considerable expertise on their versions of rock & roll and R&B standards like Clarence "Frogman" Henry's "Ain't Got No Home," Chuck Berry's "The Promised Land," and Fats Domino's "I'm Ready," but of course that didn't do much to satisfy the audience they had established with their original material and that, two years after the disappointing Cahoots, was waiting for something in the same league with their first three albums.

After they had been in a slump for a couple of years, The Band recorded this CD. It isn’t as deep as their best work, but it is enjoyable. My favorites are Mystery Train, a real rocker, Saved, which shows their gospel side, and A Change Is Gonna Come, a showcase for Rick Danko. The bonus tracks up the running time to 61 minutes. This is roots rock at its best.

This album is awesome when you want to chill to the sounds that the band grew up on. This album was heavily influenced by Garth hudson (organist). He felt it was a reflection of youth. Definately check this out if you dig the band.
