The path to true love is anything but smooth in the serviceable third book of McQuiston’s Victoriana Affairs by Moonlight trilogy (after Summer Is for Lovers). Patrick Channing becomes the Earl of Haversham as a result of two suspicious deaths. The nearsighted Miss Julianne Baxter believes she saw him murder his older brother in late 1841, and 11 months after he hies off to Scotland to escape the law, his father is killed. The impetuous Julianne realizes she erred and chases him down, and by the time they return to England, they’re married—to protect her reputation and prevent her from being forced to testify against him—and he is wanted for both murders. The newlyweds frustrate and hurt each other with poor communication as they try to save Patrick’s neck. Winning leads gradually lose their luster, and the otherwise strong series ends on a sour note. Overview
To ruin a man's life once takes a regrettable mistake. To do so twice takes a woman like Julianne Baxter.
Eleven months ago, Julianne's statement to the authorities wrongly implicated Patrick, the new Earl of Haversham, in his older brother's death. The chit is as much trouble as her red hair suggests, and just as captivating. Now she has impetuously tracked him to the wilds of Scotland, insisting that he return home to face a murder charge and save his family from ruin. A clandestine wedding may be the only way to save her reputation—and his neck from the hangman's noose.
Julianne has no objection to the match. More and more she's convinced of Patrick's innocence, though when it comes to igniting her passions, the man is all too guilty. And if they can only clear his name, a marriage made in haste could bring about the most extraordinary pleasure . . .
Editorial Reviews
Refreshing historical romance is a fantastic blend of traditional historical romance with unexpected plot twists and characters… I also had NO idea who the killer in this novel was. When the killer was finally revealed, I had to scrape my jaw off my Kindle so I could finish reading.
Jennifer McQuiston continues her series with this immensely appealing tale with a mystery that will keep readers off balance. Both hero and heroine are exquisitely rendered, warts and all.
McQuiston secures her reputation for creating romantic, empathetic, and unique love stories. She truly touches readers with her characters’ compassion toward each other, as well as to a dog too adorable not to love.
A delightful story of righting wrongs, even though it may be hard and finding that one person to love. McQuiston was magical, like always. Fantastic addition to the Avon collection.
