Moonlight Serenade

Moonlight Serenade, Carly Simon's fourth collection of standards in 25 years, digs a little deeper than her previous outings. Perhaps it's the plethora of standards outings by popular artists -- Rod Stewart's done three in a row -- perhaps it's because of her pedigree and background; perhaps it's simply because she thinks she can pull it off; and indeed she can. She delivers these 12 songs with panache, savvy, and just a touch of sass. Produced by Richard Perry, these tracks are not so much elegant as enigmatic. Simon appreciates the swing inherent in delivering a standard, even if it's a ballad. Her smoky voice lends itself well to "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "My One and Only Love," and her sense of theatrics is drop-dead gorgeous on "I Only Have Eyes for You," which is a bit of a radical reworking that actually works. The slippery delivery on these songs -- her read of "All the Things You Are," for example, may be considered vulgar by some, but it's utterly lovely and brave -- is what lends them their unique, sexy character. This isn't for everyone, but it's a winner nonetheless.

I was making coffee one morning recently, when I heard this low, husky "Ginmill" voice start singing "MoonGlow". I did not move for four minutes. When the song ended, the DJ announced the CD title, song name and artist name. I went online and purchased " Moonlight Serenade" immediately

Love her voice, very disappointed in this Bla CD though. Didn't hear the magic. To think she sang "itsi bitsi spider" and it was incredible. That voice. I don't know what it is, didn't like the CD, sorry.

This was truly worth waiting for.. it is so beautiful and an album that you will want to keep in your home, in your car, and for your DVD player. I grew up listening to Carly Simon, fell in love listening to her gorgeous meliflous voice and poetic lyrics and now she continues to inspire my life and transform even the gloomiest of days into a day filled with sunlight and moonbeams. Thank you Carly.

Carly is familiar to recording standards(Torch,My Romance,Film Noir),but guided my Richard Perry(No Secrets,Hotcakes,Nobody Does It Better) Carly has never sounded better! The collection of songs maybe the reason. Every note is suited for Carly's rich voice.Female singers of today(??? are there any) take heed. Will you be around 30 years from now? Carly Simon has shown in the past her depth and soul and now she shows are impecciable taste in the classics.I do have personal favorites:I Only Have Eyes For You..a good song for radio IF anyone ever played this type of music,In The Still of The Night,Moonglow. The dvd is pure fun and nice to see the elusive singer talk about her choices for the cd.

She used to be one of my favorites years ago. I heard this album on a plane trip. As soon as I returned I bought it. It is uneven in quality but some cuts are sensational. A very nice album.

Just discovered why this cd sounds like karoake. She used synth music instead of live musicians!!

Although I don't consider myself a big fan of "standards", I may become one if Carly Simon became the "standard" for the "standards". The combination of her unique voice, expresiveness, and the selection of beautiful songs, together with Richard Perry's arrangements, make this CD a masterpiece. I truly appreciate different opinions, but in this case, I confess it is hard for me to understand even a minority of negative reviews here. Listen to it without any prejudice and enjoy it!

Easily the best of her four standards albums. Followed closely by Film Noir. Can't believe some of the bad reviews posted here, so I thought I'd put the record straight! Yes, of course Carly fans would prefer a release of her own original material, but this is still excellent.

Carly Simon was one of the first of the post-60s singer/songwriters to explore the classic songs of the '30s, '40s, and '50s with her album (more than 20 years ago), Torch. Since then, she's recorded a few other albums of classics and standards of these eras, but Moonlight Serenade stands out as the best of these -- and the best as compared to her contemporaries who have also been exploring the "great American songwriter" catalog, in the post-Torch era. Too many highlights to mention, but the pairing of Perry and Simon with this record make it a special event, and her voice has never sounded better. If you are a fan of her music, or of these songs, do not miss Moonlight Serenade. Every single song here is a stand-out, and they seem to have been written just for her voice.

I've always loved, Carly Simon's, music but this is by far the, best! The songs on Moonlight Serenade truly are felt with her voice, singing them. It is music you can get lost in and dream while, just listening to or dancing. If you have ever been truly, in love this CD will capture the words you would love to sing to your partner!

For my money, nobody does it better than Carly Simon singing the standards. She sounds so relaxed, and her warm vocals are beautiful,

I just bought the new Carly Simon "Moonlight Serenade". I listened in the car on the way home and put it in at home and it is still playing. Her voice was made for this style of music. She has never sounded better. This cd should be considered for the Grammy Album of The Year. My favorite song so far is "I Only Have Eyes For You" and her rendition of "How Long Has This Been Going ON"....I have been a fan of Carly since "No Secrets" and her collerbration with longtime friend Richard Perry has paid off. Go out and buy this cd. It is better than any of Rod Stewarts standards. Even Carly's "My Romance" or "Torch" do not even compare to "Moonlight Serenade".......

I happened to be in B&N today on my lunch break completely forgetting this new Carly album came out yesterday. I decided to test it and my mouth dropped opened. The album is gorgeous....and this is only from listening to 30 second clips! Carly's rich alto fits beautifully with the fabulous arrangements on all tracks, and I am glad that the B&N stores offer a bonus track. Can't wait to go home and try the DVD side, since this is my first DualDisc. I love all the songs, and find that Carly's take on "I Only Have Eyes For You" has become my favorite version, over the Art Garfunkel cover from years ago. It's also nice to hear the lyrics on "Moonlight Serenade" for a change. Very Grammy worthy for the Best Tradition Pop Vocal category, and I believe every ballroom couple, studio, dance hall, etc, will be purchasing this one. Makes you want to grab your partner and float on air.

On yet another "standards songbook" by Carly, this is probably the worst one she has to offer, listen to all her S pronounciations (lispy) in the songs (did she do this on purpose?), it was annoying. They could of at least dubbed these out, she sings off key on alot of the songs and her voice sounds strained, its not the Carly most of us are used to. I bought this CD and since it had been opened I only got a partial credit when I went to return it, I traded it in for some earlier stuff, you would be better off listening to the singers that made these songs really great, I had high hopes for this CD to.............. Come on Carly please do something original, how many times can one artist do standards and keep releasing a greatest hits CD????

Just bought Moonlight Serenade. It is fabulous! Way to go, Carly! Had NO idea you could sing songs like this (where have I been?)!!!!

Sorry, Carly fans (and I AM one), this latest installment in the "Rock & Pop Stars Revive Their Sagging Careers With An Album Of Standards" parade is a letdown. The arrangments are sappy and predictable, the song selection is even MORE predictable (tip for the under-25 set: there were other songs beside "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "Moonglow" recorded in the 30's & 40's), and Carly's voice, while not bad, is not the crystal clear beauty it once was. I loved her album "Torch" 24 years ago, and it's still a gem. But this sad attempt at commercial success is a dud. Of course, as I write this, it's her highest-charting recording in over 30 years. Go figure. Ella, Billie, Sarah, Carmen, have nothing to worry about!

And now Carly leaves the ranks of" Folk Singer", a place that she belongs. Compare her to Peggy Lee, Lee Wiley,Sarah,Ella. She does not rate !!!

I purchased this CD today - I Want My Money Back!!!!!! I wanted to like this - love jazz, love Diana Krall - liked Rod Stewart's Jazz albums (most of them) but this, I'm sorry to say is a DUD. Carly's voice seems to be struggling to get through a song - her voice sounds old. Arrangements are uninspiring. Just totally disappointing overall.

Carly is one of my favorites, but this cd is not up to par for her. She sounds like she can hardly get the strength to sing. Too bad.

Carly is at her finest with this album of standards. Her fourth standards album, she shines singing the titles she grew up listening to. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is stunning. The entire album has been produced perfectly, resembling the albums of Sinatra and other greats. Well, now Carly, you are one of the greats! I reccomend this album to anyone and everyone - Simon fan or not. You'll be blown away.

I bought this album recently, but have discovered that the DualDisc format is incompatible with most of my players. It sounds awful in my PC, won't let me rip to MP3 or WAVE (I listed to most of my music on my PC), and won't play properly on the CD side, only the DVD side, in my Onyoko CD/DVD player. I would buy the album again if it were in a normal format.

Smooth and Breezy, Love Carly's voice, Most of these collections go at a snails pace, but this one has a little bounce

Love the way Carly does these songs, Her voice is smooth as velvet cascading over the music, This CD seems to glide, it is so well done, Carly has never sounded better,

I admit I was never a huge Carly Simon fan, but found her voice just ok. However I do love the songs on this album, but couldn't listen to anymore than 3 of them before I had to shut it off. I would be glad to pass this CD off to the first passer-by I see.
