FASCINATING READING THAT WILL MAKE YOU HUNGRY!!!!!! This cookbook is so much more than a cookbook! It IS teeming with awesome recipes I want to try... but I also loved how the authors started the book acquainting the reader with Moosewood's history and each recipe has a story of how it was developed... This all adds up to fascinating reading that will make you hungry! AND a huge plus for me... none of the recipes seem complicated. They are doable and delicious! This cookbook has already become one of my fav recipe books as I'm sure I'll refer to it often!!!!! I highly recommend it! 5 STARS!
Flavorful pescetarian cookbook without weird ingredients. This is a mostly vegetarian cookbook; it does have a section for fish but I believe all the other chapters are vegetarian (and feature dairy and eggs). I've purchased several vegetarian cookbooks over the past few years and this one is by far my favorite. It's one that has produced the most flavorful results and uses accessible ingredients (i.e. I think most recipes can be made without a trip to Whole Foods). I've tried about 4-5 recipes since purchasing this a few months ago. I've mostly focused on the bean recipes. I've gotten great responses from folks on the Red Bean and Walnut Spread and just tonight I made the Creole Red Beans which I enjoyed. Both are tasty (although I might cut back on the salt and tomato paste for the creole beans). It also has serving suggestions. Some of the few critiques that I have is that some of the recipes seem a little salt heavy and I wish they had nutritional information. But overall, this book is great and I would highly recommend it. And specifically regarding the Nook version, I haven' had any issues so far.
I ate at the Moosewood restaurant back when I was in college and I've been hooked ever since. I have several of their cookbooks and use them often. This collection is a great quick reference to some of their long time favorites. The book is well thought out and the recipes are easy to follow. This has helped preplan and make meals ahead of time on many occasions. It will be one of my "go to" gifts this Holiday Season.
I'm going to begin with a caveat--I did not request this cookbook. The publisher sent me this cookbook unsolicited for my review. I don't have any problem with them doing that, just want to be up front that this is not a cookbook I would normally request. I am not a vegetarian or vegan and I don't eat soy products (I don't think they're good for you, but I'm not going to start that argument here). There is a LOT of tofu in this book! There are some interesting recipes and even some things I do myself already (Roasted Cauliflower, Roasted Broccoli, etc), but over all, this really isn't my cup of tea. The book itself is lovely with its colorful, padded cover, nice photos and heavy duty pages. For someone who loves Moosewood recipes, this book would be a must. I'm giving it four stars based on the quality of the book, and the fact that it would be a great cookbook for a Moosewood Restaurant fan. I received a copy of this book from St. Martin's Griffin Press for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
