Overview

Book One in The Maple Leaf Series:

Lily Hinsdale spends her California days designing extravagant hotels for Utopia Resorts. Her nights are filled with the glitz and glamour of upscale parties. Until her grandmother dies and leaves Lily property in wretched Vermont. The woods mean only one thing to Lily—nightmares. When Utopia wants the land for development, Lily is forced to travel to a place she'd rather forget.

Rick Stannard makes maple syrup and builds barns in the peace and quiet of picturesque Vermont. Noisy New York City nearly killed him a few years back, and now he lives a calm, simple life with his coyote, Poe, and his beloved book collection. It's the only way he's guaranteed to wake up each morning.

When Lily marches her expensive boots onto Rick's land and proposes turning it into a mega resort, the serenity of the woods is shattered. Lily always closes a deal. Rick never intends to sell. They'll need to compromise, or someone else will do it for them. Someone who is not afraid of the woods or the city.

Or spilling a little blood.

Christine DePetrillo was very entertaining. This is not a cliffhanger. It is a story about two complex people who had their spirits broken by bumps in life. Two seemingly strong, confident people who lived restricted lives to accommodate tragedies that put them into specific lives constructed to avoid what almost destroyed them. Lily inherited her beloved grandmother's home in Vermont. Her career in Utopia as designer was exciting, creative, and strickly urban. She was parnoidly afraid of woods/nature and it started in her youth while she was staying with her grandmother. She avoided anything rural, and definitely kept herself away from anyrhing slightly woodsy. When Lily inherited the estate from her grandmother, her first thought was to get rid of it. Selling it to her company, and then developing it into another hotel get-away was perfect. Unfortunately, it was too small to fit into Utopia's type of resort, but luckily there was property next door that could be bought. The owner of the woods actually held a lease on the maple trees on her land that she had to convince him to release her from, in order to sell her property in the first place Rick never wanted to go anywhere near people. Only seeing his aunt and two cousins was enough of a social life for him. He hadn't wanted to be around others since his health crisis in NY City. All he needed now were his trees, his syrup business, and constructing barns he designed. Although Lily was beautiful, she wanted to destroy his life and the world he thrived in. I enjoyed how the plot twisted and resolved the complecities of two souls. I recommend this book.
