Some people might say that the premise for this book is crazy...that this would never happen to two seniors in high school.  But let me tell you, their story is MORE THAN believable.  Of course, these things don't happen to many 18 year olds, but in the end, every last piece of the story is possible.  It breaks your heart, but then helps you pick up the pieces.  I love the characters!  And I definitely cried while reading this one! Mikayla thinks she's already well on her way to happily ever after.  She's been dating her boyfriend forever, they're going to the same college next year, and it's prom night!  But what goes down at the restaurant before they even arrive at their prom will start the ball rolling on a night that will forever change Mikayla's life. Jake is going to his own prom stag...not exactly by choice, but alone, nonetheless.  After watching what happened to Mikayla at the restaurant, and then finding himself alone with her, he asks her if she'll come to his prom with him instead of going to hers.  Who knew that asking her that one little question would also change Jake's life irrevocably. Mikayla is about to lose almost everything she's ever known...but she will also gain new friends, new family, and love. Jake feels like he has nothing to lose helping Mikayla out...but what he didn't count on was the possibility of losing Mikayla. I SERIOUSLY cannot wait for the next book in this series!

(3-3.5 stars) I have mixed feelings on how to rate this book and how heavy my feelings should way it down. I do want to be fair. I really enjoyed the story but there were some things that didn’t sit well with me. MORE THAN THIS started off so light and bubbly. I had no idea what horrors Mikayla was going to suffer. I loved how Jake and his family rallied around Mickey in her time of need. It restores your faith in humanity and makes you hope if your child was in this situation they’d have people around them just like them. Mikayla and Jake’s romance was of the extra slow burn variety. I have no issues with that especially under the circumstances but there were other things, things they didn’t discuss that irritated me. I know she went through a horrible ordeal, but it didn’t seem natural that they’d not address certain things. Overall, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Prom should have been everything for Mikayla. She catches her boyfriend doing something he shouldn't be doing, before they even make it to prom. Despite the pain she feels, she meets Jake who  ends up taking her to his own prom. Their connection is what helps her overcome her pain that James caused her, and still have a memorable night. When the night is finally over, and she feels she has somewhat recovered from her pain, she gets the most devastating news of her life, and it definitely becomes a night she will never forget. Mikayla and Jake have a once in a life time connection that only few find. It was touching to follow along their slow relationship that builds while Mikayla heals emotionally. She may not know exactly who she is without Jake since he's been there since the day her life changed, but it doesn't matter because he is a part of her, and she is a part of him. They are a perfect match and their story brought me to tears at some points. The book is very well written. It's separated into different viewpoints between Jake and Mikayla. It was great to see the viewpoints they had on everything, and how similar they thought without even realizing it. This is a 5/5 book for me, and I'm headed over to buy the second book in the series.

--I absolutely love this book, it's definitely a-must-read!!!-- :) More Than This had me captivated from the start, the characters were relatable, and as the story started to unravel it was hard to stop reading the book.  One night changed Mikayla's life forever... She never imagined that her much anticipated prom night was going to turned out to be a complete disaster in the end. Mikayla has the perfect live, she has a supportive family, great friends, and a boyfriend. What took her by surprised was to see her boyfriend cheating on her the night of their prom. She is destroyed and doesn't know what to do, so when a handsome stranger walks on her and asks her to go to his prom instead, Mikayla immediately accepts. She dances with Jake, and meets his friends, who all embraced her like one of her own. Yet just when she thought her night couldn't have turned any worse, she finds the police and ambulances outside her house. It appears that her family had been murdered, everything in Mikayla's world comes crashing at the news. Meanwhile, Jake is there, by her side and takes her to his home where his parents help her settle in until she can get someone in her family to take her in. As the two face with the challenges ahead of them, they start to realize that they might just be falling for each other. Yet, there is something holding Mikayla back, and she doesn't want to fully commit to a relationship that might just break her heart.  There were a lot of things that I absolutely loved about this book, one of them being the character development in the main characters. Jake is one of those characters that I would love to have in real life, he is caring, and smart. He has a future ahead of him that demands his full attention, yet he always seems to take time to take care of Mikayla. He worries about her, and that is evident from the very start. On the other hand, Mikayla closes herself up because she is afraid of losing something that she loves, just like she lost her family. She has to make choices about her future, and what she truly wants. There is the mystery of what actually happened the night when her family got murdered. It was a bit rushed at the end, when we as readers get to find out who did it, and it all happens very quickly. I still liked how everything ended, the writing was well done as well. Overall, I would highly suggest reading this book, it will not disappoint.:) *ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

4.5 - There is only so much shit I can take before all the fucked-up things in my life consume me. Stars! More Than this is the first book I have read by Jay McLean, it is what I affectionately class as a ‘kitchen sinker’, in that it feels like the author has literally thrown as many tropes as she possibly can at it. This is the type of book I need to be in a certain mood for, otherwise I just get frustrated and annoyed. Luckily, I was in the right mood, although I did get a little frustrated, but that was more to do with the copious amounts of almost home-runs, and dry (as well as wet) non-humping that went on for most of this book. I’ve been a part of the worst night of her life. Mikayla has to be one of the unluckiest characters I have had the opportunity of reading about in quite a while. It is difficult to write a detailed review because of her story as it would pretty much give most of the book away. Betrayal and Tragedy are words that are used in the synopsis, and they do pretty much sum up the biggest parts of the story. Jake and his friends are what made this book for me, I liked Kayla for the most part, and even though the bulk of the story is a result of the things that happen to her, he was the one I actually cared about as the book progressed. The guy (as well as his family and friends) literally puts his life on-hold to help her through the worst times imaginable, and at points I really struggled to understand her actions and reactions towards him. What dropped this book from the full 5 stars for me was the fact that with all the drama already going on the author then felt the need to add in random acts of both of them trying to make the other jealous as well as failing to communicate with each other about totally banal things bringing about totally pointless arguments as well. I also found the whole ‘Casey interludes’ to be a complete waste of time (unless she figures in other books in the series more prominently, if so I will take that point back!). ”It’s just you. It’s only ever been just you. It will always only ever be just you.” I am late to the party with this series, but I kind of like that, because I now have 3 books I can read in succession and a new release due at some point in 2015. Win-Win! This may have been the first book I have read by this author; it damn sure won’t be the last. ARC generously provided via Netgalley, in exchange for the above honest review.

What I find the hardest about writing reviews for realistic fiction is that it could be real. Like this isn't just a story, this could easily be someone's life. Not word for word of course but this could happen to someone and I'm sure it has. As I said above I cannot imagine how that feels and for the author to write about it with such fierce emotion is incredible. It felt real and it hurt when I put myself in Kayla's shoes but I doubt it hurt half as much as it actually would if any of this happened to me. Unfathomable. More Than This was an emotional rollercoaster with definite highs and lows. One second things were getting hot and heavy and the next they were screaming and crying. Some parts were hilarious, some were heart-shattering, some were pure happiness and truthfully I loved every second of Jake and Kayla's story. I guess you could say I "more-than-a-lot" liked this book! It is so hard for me to put into words how much this book truly meant to me, I'll never be able to explain it. All I can say is read this book and then tell me how you feel. Do I recommend this book? Absolutely but only for 17+ years old simply because of the sex and language. If you're looking for a book to help you regain a little faith in humanity this one is for you.

Kind of a teaser story. Not much of plot. A lot of rambling through and maybe we'll get "together" this time. And the ending - not very satisfying. Plain and simple, too much game playing. I did like Jake, his devotion and his POV. I rate the book as so-so. S.A.K.

I absolutely adored this story! Through a series of tragic events Mikayla and Jake are brought together. It doesn't take long for the two to realize they have a strong connection. But will outside forces keep them apart. I got this book from a giveaway. And I couldn't put it down. I thought Jake and Kayla were such great characters. Can't wait for Logan's story to come out.
