Description: This is the fifth edition of one of the standard textbooks of anesthesiology.
Purpose: It aims to cover every topic relevant to the practice of anesthesiology. It is clearly written and richly illustrated, intended to be understandable for medical students and serve as an essential reference for both residents and practitioners.
Audience: While the authors represent that the audience is anesthesia residents, medical students will find it to be a useful reference, and attending physicians will find it much more concise than alternative comprehensive textbooks of anesthesiology. The editors and the authors represent a cross-section of outstanding practitioners from across the U.S.
Features: The text is concise, and each chapter contains highly useful tables and figures that practitioners will find extremely useful. The theme of this book has always been "everything you need to know, and nothing you don't," and this edition maintains that tradition.
Assessment: This would be an excellent book for any first-year resident in anesthesia to read over the course of the year. It also is an outstanding and concise reference for anesthesiology practitioners in general, and should be in every anesthesia library. It is unique in that it is both comprehensive and concise.
