Gr 2-4-These titles offer a unique slant on the history of the American West. The 1200-mile Mormon Pioneer Trail was developed in the 1840s by Brigham Young, and the Santa Fe Trail was opened by William Becknell in 1821 as a means to take goods out West. Both books have short chapters; large type; plenty of white space; sidebars; brief time lines; and abundant illustrations, including black-and-white and color drawings, photographs, and maps. While other titles exist on the Santa Fe Trail, there is little on the Mormon Pioneer Trail. Good choices for emerging researchers and Wild West enthusiasts.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
