I highly recommend this well written story, set in the high desert of Eastern Oregon. Jiggs, a middle aged, hard working rancher, discovers a skull on his property one day, and his search to find answers will reveal the family history he has never been able to pry from his cantankerous, reticent father. Through the book, we see Jiggs relationship with both his father and his son, as memories are dredged up, both good and bad. Plenty of laughs to break up the drama, and a smooth unraveling of the Woolsey family story make for a very satisfying read. I think I know what my Dad is getting for Father's Day.

Just like life - sometimes funny and happy - sometimes sad and weary - it always comes out in the wash. I don't give five stars very often. This one was six stars and then some. So glad i selected this one.

At last. A touching and realistic story without cliche romance or sappy drivel. Love love love this story. Will read all the Two Pan novels with relish!

I enjoyed reading this story about 3 generations of men living and working on the family ranch. It was sometimes a bit confusing, but a good and worthwhile read. esk 08/2016

This is a great book. Part mystery. Part family issues we all face. I loved that the story was set in eastern Oregon. I have been there many times. It's true that to ranch in that barren landscape you have to be tough. I do hope that we may read more stories from Two Pan.

I liked it, a bit unrealistic to have a man in his forty's who had no idea of his own family's history, bordering on the impossible when he finds it all out from neighbors he has known all his life, but a good read.

Wasn't sure about reading this: free books aren't always what you expect, but what a very pleasant experience! The prose immediately captured my attention; so lyrical and dead-on capturing the Two Pan ambiance in such finely-crafted words. So from the first I thought I would enjoy that aspect of the book, whether the story panned out or not. Surprise! The characters reveal themselves beautifully (or not, as you will see) and slowly. These people feel real. The story was quite captivating, and one that many people will relate to, though I hope not so steeply. It's what my grandfather might have called a ripping good yarn. Funny, tragic, imbued with some mountain wisdom, and "plain common sense", and touching on the mysteries of just being human. Every one has a story, and some stories are really really interesting. I loved the story, I loved the writing style, I loved the words strung together to make a pearly wet strand of history, tragedy, mystery and love, all would around a nice place called Two Pan.
