Lawyer Jake Lassiter has his own ethical rules. "I won't sleep with a client's wife...unless I knew her first." Okay, so they're flexible rules. He's sleeping with Gina Florio, an ex-girlfriend but the current wife of his very dangerous client, mobster Nicky Florio. That's just the beginning of Jake's problems. Florio may or may not have killed an environmentalist who froze to death in Nicky's wine cellar. Florio has a secret plan for the Everglades -- no spoilers here -- and suffice it to say that Jake has no idea what his client is up to. Florio will figure out what's going on between Jake and his wife, and when he does, there's a chilling scene in an Everglades fishing cabin that will stay with the reader a long time. "Mortal Sin" manages to be menacing, funny, smart, clever, and also make some good points about the environment and modern-day life in Florida. Levine is one of the best crime fiction writers around, and I highly recommend this book as well as "To Speak for the Dead" and "Riptide."
