Description: This book emphasizes the needs of individuals across the life span, from infancy through old age. The responsibilities and limitations of nursing assistants are clearly identified with a focus on legal and ethical aspects of the role. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The author places emphasis on the concepts and principles which support treating the patient or resident as a person, ethical and legal aspects, delegation, safety, and work ethics. Organizational strategies values include awareness and understanding of the work setting and the individuals in that setting; respect for the patient or resident as a physical, social psychological, and spiritual being who has basic needs and protected rights; respect for personal choice and dignity of the person; appreciating the role of cultural heritage and religion in health and illness practices; and understanding body structure and function to give safe care and to safely perform psychomotor skills. The book helps students to understand that learning proceeds from the simple to the complex; that certain concepts and functions are foundational and central to other procedures — safety, body mechanics, and preventing infection; that the nursing process is the basis for planning and delivering nursing care and that nursing assistants must follow the person's care plan. These are worthy objectives which the author has met.
Audience: The book is intended to prepare students to function as nursing assistants in hospitals, nursing centers, and home care settings. According to the author, it also serves the needs of students and instructors in community colleges, technical schools, high schools, hospitals, nursing centers, and other agencies. The book could be a valuable resource for students as they study for their competency examinations. The author is a credible authority.
Features: This sixth edition has been updated to include changes made in laws and standards issued by government and accrediting agencies. The book is very readable and user friendly with numerous full color illustrations and icons, key terms with definitions, boxes and tables with useful study guides for students, delegation guidelines, safety alerts and charting samples. A feature that could be very beneficial to students are the procedure boxes which are divided into pre-procedure, procedure, and post-procedure. Quality of life issues are also highlighted in procedure boxes, as well as skills included in the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP).
Assessment: The physical appearance of the book is outstanding. The student preface offers helpful information on how to negotiate the book and a useful study system through the use of survey or previewing, questioning, reading and recording, reciting and reviewing. The sixth edition does justify replacing the previous edition.
