Mossflower Summary – In the second novel of the Redwall series titled “Mossflower” readers are taking back to a time before Redwall Abbey when Mossflower was ruled by wildcats and the epic tale of how Martin, the greatest mouse warrior, came to Mossflower and became a legend. At the beginning, Martin is thrown into prison at Castle Kotir, where the tyrannical wildcat, Verdauga Greeneyes, resides. To make matters worse, Martin’s sword, the sword that belong to his father, was broken in half by his captors. Within time, Verdauga’s power hungry daughter, Tsarmina, decides to take the throne by disposing of her aging father and imprisoning her brother, Gingivere, and becomes queen. With the help of a fellow mouse inmate named Gonff, self proclaimed and infamous Prince of Mousthieves, and with the aid of Gonff allies from the CORIM (Council of Resistance in Mossflower), Martin escape Kotir and is free mouse once again. At Brockhall, the CORIM”s headquarters, Martin meets several new allies like Abbess Germaine, an old female mouse from Loamhedge Abbey, and a badger named Bella of Brockhall, daughter to Boar The Fighter and granddaughter to Lord Brocktree. There a plan is hatch to attack Kotir, ending the tyranny and the villainous hold over the land of Mossflower, but also to start a quest. With belief of hope in their minds, Martin, Gonff, Bella, and Young Dinny, a mole, begin their journey to Salamandastron, home to the great Badger Lords, to find Bella’s father and enlist his aid in the battle against Tsarmina. After a dangerous and perilous journey through Bat Mountpit and the Toadlands and with the aid of Log-a-Log Big Club, a fierce shrew warrior, Martin and his companions come to Salamandastron, there they met Bella’s father, Boar the Fighter. It is also there they reforge Martin’s sword from the metal a fallen star. But will that be enough? Will Martin and friends make it back in time to help the rest of CORIM fighters to attack Castle Kotir and end Tsarmina reign? Will Bella’s father return with them? Will Kotir fall or stand at the end? Will the land of Mossflower ever be free from evil’s grip? A tale like no other awaits you as, in the end, a duel between Martin and Tsarmina will decide who the victor is…..over all of Mossflower. Reason To Read – What more could a reader ask for. A great hero, a great villain, a wide range of secondary and stock characters that are both creative and memorable, a perilous quest, puzzling riddles, and a climactic battle at the end. I read Mossflower back in 2003 and I was completely amazed by it. Brian Jacques writing style must be mention as it is essential to the success of his series. The story itself is quite a page turner as you are always waiting to know what happens next. I believe that there is no prior reading for this book, so first time readers of the series can jump right into the land of Mossflower. However, to get little more knowledge, readers might want to read the first book of the series Redwall or more likely Martin The Warrior as this book follows after the events of Martin The Warrior. I would recommend this book for ages 9 to 10 years of age. Hurry and buy this book now and witness the birth of a legend
