A great ethnography of low-income African American mothers raising children in troubled Indianapolis neighborhoods. Rosier tracks mothers and children from Head Start to the early elementary years. Based on three years of interviews with inner-city mothers, interviews with elementary school teachers, and participant observation of the families in their homes, schools, and other social settings, this book brings forth the voices of mothers in creating a portrait of low-income African American families raising children in the face of formidable structural obstacles.
