Forget having a lively after school social life, Ebony Charmed is fighting to keep the entire afterlife alive.
Ebony’s less-than-average spirit tracking abilities are ruining more than sixth grade at Motley Junior High: School for the Psychically and Celestially Gifted. Her parents argue so much her dad's moved out. And, even though he’s scared of his own shadow and insists on bringing his slimy, legless lizard everywhere they go, Ebony wouldn’t survive without her best friend, Fleishman.
When Ebony’s Deadly Creatures & Relics’ project goes missing she learns her missing project is one of the keys to saving the spirit world.
Now Ebony and Fleishman must battle beasts from Norse mythology to retrieve her project before spirits are lost, the Well of Urd dries up, and Ebony loses all hope of reuniting her family. But someone lies in wait, and he has other plans…including creating a new world of spirits without them in it.

Reviewed by Melinda Hills for Readers' Favorite For Ebony Charmed, starting middle school at Motley Junior High: School for the Psychically and Celestially Gifted was supposed to be the beginning of wonderful things. In Motley Education, Book One of The URD Saga by S.A. Larsen, it couldn’t be more different! Ebony still messes up with her assignments and doesn’t think she has the powers or abilities that would make her fit in. At home, things are just as bad since her dad moved out because of constant arguments with her mom. At least Ebony has her best friend and GTG, Fleishman and his pet legless lizard, Nigel, not to mention the 3 Ms who are ghosts in the boneyard Ebony has talked to since she was a little girl. Together, Ebony and Fleishman work on a class project that turns into a major adventure into other levels of the human and celestial worlds where evil lurks and a power struggle threatens to ruin everything. Encountering fire and ice giants, a huge wolf and ravens with mechanical attachments, Ebony and Fleishman disappear through portals into different dimensions, fortunately finding friends along the way. Will Ebony find her missing Deadly Creatures and Relics project, which seems to be of interest to a number of creatures, and how will she make everything right again when she thinks she can’t do anything? Scary fun and frightening adventures are only part of what you will find in Motley Education. S.A. Larsen has created a wonderful world full of dynamic characters, ever increasing intrigue, and imaginative worlds where amazing things happen. Motley Education is the perfect middle grade fantasy book to capture your attention and engage your imagination as you experience Norse mythology with Ebony and Fleishman, aided by the computer gaming skills of Ebony’s brother, Ethan. There is plenty that middle schoolers can relate to within the pages and S.A. Larsen treats this variety of themes with straightforward insight and gentle interpretation. Enjoy Book One of the URD Saga, not only because it is a great story, but because it promises to be the beginning of an even more exciting journey. Terrific story with lots to compliment! Quite engaging, which is perfect for the targeted age group, (and older readers as well!). I can't wait to see what comes next.
Any book that opens in a dark and creepy cemetery with hints of paranormal goings on is a winner from the get-go for me. Ebony Charming is a sixth grader at Motley Junior High—School for the Psychically & Celestially Gifted. That’s all I’d have to know to grab up this book—seriously, the school’s name alone was enough for me. For fans of books like the Harry Potter series, this series is a charming and fun alternative. Don’t get me wrong—there is plenty of suspense, lots of scary moments, and a plethora of well-developed and sometimes creepy characters. The story cleverly blends a contemporary setting with ancient Norse mythology, as it follows the adventure of Ebony, a misfit in the school because she doesn’t appear to have any special powers… at least no special powers she can control. She’s bullied by other students, is a disappointment to her teachers, and is at odds with her parents who are separated because of her. Her best girlfriends are three ghosts who communicated with her through sign language. And that’s just the set up. This is a wonderful fantasy adventure written for middle-grade kids—but I think older kids (and adults like me!!!) will enjoy it too. Nicely done.
When I first picked up Motley Education, I was immediately intrigued! This book practically sent me to a different world! While it is both eerie and mystifying, it also posed as an amazing comedy! From beginning to end I was laughing out loud, which in my opinion is a wonderful quality for a book to wield. This book is definitely something I would recommend to anyone with an open mind. I loved this book! And I can't wait for a possible sequel. E. M. Dearborn Age: 12
Loved reading this book! MOTLEY EDUCATION, Author S. A. Larsen’s brings this world to life. Middle grade readers will really enjoy this story of Ebony and her friend Fleishman. This book holds mystery, humor, and mystery. I recommend this read to anyone who loves paranormal lined with twists and turns. This book was a page turner from the start and a fun read!
Epic Creepy and Exciting adventure I absolutely love the adventures of Ebony Charmed at in and around Motley Junior High. This middle grade paranormal adventure for the Celestially Gifted has rich characters, drama at home, 6th grade angst and a fun well developed world. Ebony isn't alone, her partner in this epic twist and turn adventure is Fleishman who brings the lighter side to the dark and scary trails Ebony has to go through to save her project, her home - heck the entire world. This was a well developed and entertaining story. Some intense suspense, scary stuff, and deep juicy characters. A must read here. My 13 yr old son who read it with me was absorbed.
