In the early days of our young nation, young men looked upon mountain men with awe. They were considered men of a higher caliber in adventure, scouting, and daring escapades in life. Few people knew the harsh environment in which these men lived. Many strong, young men never made the grade into real status of this lifestyle. These men fought danger, harsh weather, crooked white men, and hostile Indians. Without these men our nation would have faced a very hard start toward the western movement of the population.
