Maire Cote has always had it tough in Highland Home. Her father passed away when she was just a kid, her mother is dating another woman, and she's constantly bullied at school by "the golden ones", the elite clique in school. By day the golden ones hurt her and by night a handsome, blood-lusting creature haunts her. When Mathias Auer enters Highland Home and enrolls as a new student, his arrival brings change for Maire in the form of a chain of strange events and supernatural creatures she thought didn't exist. I was generously sent a copy of Mourning Sun by Shari Richardson and when it arrived I couldn't wait to dig into it. The setting of the story takes place in a typical town with a typical high school, however, it has an unusual name that sticks out and grabs your attention. The characters in Mourning Sun are different. Maire, who still grieves over the loss of her dad, is constantly bullied at school by the elite clique called "the golden ones". Sometimes the attacks are pointed towards her mother who is seeing another woman by the name of Tawnya, and how her mother's sexual preference is potentially contagious to others including Maire. Mathias, the obvious love interest, has an extremely formal way of speaking, it tends to stick out like a sore thumb when intermingled with all the informal speak from the other characters. I found myself sympathizing with Mathias most out of all the characters. There were, however, two characters i really disliked. Stephanie and Braden, I presume that they are the group leaders of the elite clique. They drove me absolutely insane, their constant bullying and ignorance towards Maire really got to my nerves, definitely two characters I'd throw a few punches at if they, in fact, existed. Something really interesting were that some of the characters were in fact of supernatural origin. Example; Vampire, Angel, Were-panther, Witch. I'm hoping that the next installment promises more information about the were-panthers, I'd be deeply interested in learning more about them. Unfortunately, I was saddened that the story's pace flew by too quickly and was extremely short but the ending had promise of further development in the next installment. Perhaps Maire and Mathias will encounter something sinister as opposed to the main focus in Mourning Sun being their blossoming love? One can only hope.
