Description: This book details methods for drug delivery and common measurements using mouse and disease models.
Purpose: The intent is to convey the importance of using mouse models to study disease. The book describes several genetically altered strains of mice that are used to study various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and neurological and other diseases. Methods for drug delivery and common endpoint measurements are described for each mouse model.
Audience: This book will useful to those who are interested in using mouse models in their research, particularly for those diseases discussed in the book. It will not provide significant information for models and/or diseases that are not included, but many of the methods will be useful across diverse areas of research.
Features: Several overview chapters begin the book that discuss using mouse models for drug development, the importance of using and preserving mouse models, and the concepts of how genetically altered mice are made. The remaining chapters provide background information on specific mouse models and the diseases they are used to study, as well as methods and materials needed to perform the desired experiments. Methods include routes of drug administration as well as endpoint measurements that may be needed. Although each chapter details only a limited number of routes of drug administration, there is a wide variety of information throughout the book that will be useful to all investigators needing to treat their mice with drugs, regardless of how the drug should be given. The main problem I saw is that many of the figures are not clear. Some are simply too small to be useful, and others are not sharp enough to depict what's in the picture. This can be remedied by making some figures larger and providing others in color. Chapter 14 is an example of figures that are easy to see and understand. In addition, it may be useful to provide more pictures of the different routes of drug administration — both actual pictures of the method being performed on a mouse (particularly for injections, gavage, etc.) and drawings/depictions of the anatomy of the mouse and where the needle would be placed. This was done in a couple of chapters, but should be done throughout.
Assessment: This book will be very useful for researchers using mice to study diseases, particularly if they want to use new procedures. The descriptions of how to administer drugs using various methods are presented well. The figures could be better, but the book is helpful.
