My reaction to this 2-CD set of Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni," without singers and performed by a string quartet, was "Why would any CD marketing dept. think that this would sell?" Given that (a) I love the string quartets of Mozart and have performed them many times, and (b) I love the operas of Mozart, especially "Don Giovanni," even after playing these CDs, I still fail to see the attraction. Added to that is my dislike of period instrument performances, with their lack of vibrato and a sort of wailing sound from the strings, which was particularly annoying in the overture. It seems to me that, even in Mozart's time, singers had the natural vibrato of the human voice. For these reasons, I feel that these CDs would be virtually useless as a teaching device for this opera. For the same reason, I would not buy a recording of Mozart's string quartets performed on period instruments, even though the group here is very competent. I believe that the audience for these CDs would be limited to period-instrument afficionados.
