Overview

Attention-grabbing headliners certainly helped draw eyes and ears to this recording of Mozart's Idomeneo, rè di Creta, K. 366, and those who came were greeted with a phenomenal outing. Presented in a concert setting and recorded live from three concerts, Sir Simon Rattle and his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Chorus, and continuo players Sebastian Klinger (cello) and Tim Ribchester (harpsichord), back a powerhouse collection of soloists. Chief among these are the magnificent trio of mezzo-soprano Magdalena Ko¿ená (Idamante) and sopranos Savine Devieilhe (Ilia) and Elsa Dreisig (Elettra), who have established a wonderful rapport and whose voices blend perfectly together. This is not to take anything away from tenor Andrew Staples, who excels in the titular role. Rattle keeps the drama high, and there is not a letdown to be had, making it easy for the full three discs of music to pass in what feels like a blink. Listeners looking to sample the music are encouraged to drop the needle anywhere in Act Two, which takes up the entirety of the second disc; consider perhaps the trio "Pria di partir, o Dio!" or Devieilhe's aria "Se il padre perdei." There is a small inaccuracy in the track list, synopsis, and libretti, as Elettra's fiery aria "D'Oreste, d'Ajace" is inadvertently split between tracks 18 and 19 on the third disc. This is an unfortunate error, but thankfully, the break is in a natural enough spot musically that it does not interrupt Dreisig's attention-worthy feature. In an era where customers can and do buy single tracks through different services, this could cause trouble. ~ Keith Finke
