Mozart: String Quintet No. 4, String Quartet No. 14

The Lindsays are an English ensemble whose glowing sensitivity is ideally suited to Mozart's music. On this recording they offer two very different visions of the composer by contrasting one of his brightest chamber works with what is certainly his darkest. The String Quartet No. 14 in G Major is the first in a set of six masterpieces that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, a friend and mentor. Sometimes called the "Spring" Quartet, it's so fresh and lively that it truly deserves the moniker. Perhaps in honor of its dedicatee, Mozart made the finale a contrapuntal tour de force, the fuguelike polyphony creating a sense of euphoria. The Quintet in G minor is an indescribably melancholy work, full of sighing phrases and shadowy harmonies. The extraordinary slow introduction to the final movement is the work's bleakest moment: Mozart never composed anything more desolate and disconsolate, and the Lindsays make it heartbreaking. But when the clouds finally part and the sun streams in, the music is bright and beaming -- a tragedy averted in a dramatic and life-affirming way. Taken together, these two works are ample evidence of Mozart's astounding genius.
