Despite the strong lyrical content and the E-for-explicit sticker, Mr. Freak is as lighthearted at times as Wilson's affable Def Comedy Jam looks. You expect to hear a standup routine instead of the warm, robust soul singing you get. Every one of the ten songs has merit; not a dud in the bunch. The title track's boastful lyrics are softened by a jubilant beat and a singalong Sesame Street- styled chorus; "Lets Stomp" is a groovin' party song about drinkin' whiskey, eatin' chicken wings, and dancin' till dusk; a James Brown scream initiates the scandalous "Hoochie Booty," where Wilson describes the type of booty he likes -- a hoochie booty. He gives an open invitation to married women encouraging infidelity on "I'll Be Your Lover," and he's love-struck on the romantic "Iim So Glad," which is perfect for slow dragging.
