Ms. Isaacson's Third Grade Field Trip

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
When Ms. Isaacson's third grade students win an essay contest, they get the prize of their lives: The mighty Avengers will take them on a field trip at the zoo! But their fun-filled day with Spider-Man, Storm, Ant Man, Luke Cage, and the Incredible Hulk turns into a disaster when a crafty super villain uses a robot to steal the heroes' powers and kidnap the children! Now imprisoned, can the Avengers find the strength to save the day? Originally an issue of the popular Marvel Adventures Avengers comic book series, this all-ages graphic novel offers a fun (if occasionally corny) re-interpretation of Marvel Comics' favorite superheroes. Readers who expect their superheroes to be serious will roll their eyes as they watch characters like the Hulk (a rampaging monster in the "mainstream" Marvel Universe) teach children to be gentle around animals and call sheep "dogs with fuzzy sweaters." Still, in an age where "grim and gritty" characters rule, it's refreshing to see a story that focuses more on the fun of being a superhero than the usual angst-ridden plot. The only low point comes from Tobin's choice of the Mandarin (a stereotypical Asian criminal from the Cold War era) as the story's villain. Stereotypes aside, the Mandarin's decision to use a robot is remarkably out of character for a foe who normally uses alien rings in his crimes. A more technologically-oriented villain would have better served the story. Librarians should also know that this issue is available with three other issues in the more economically-priced digest Marvel Adventures Avengers Vol. 10: Invasion. The "Avengers" series.
