Jessie had finished 8th grade in 1885 Mojave, CA, but her father wouldn't let her attend high school. He needed her to cook and wait tables in the family diner to pay for his daily excesses of tobacco and spirits. Jessie thought that being a stowaway in a borax wagon headed for Death Valley sounded like an opportunity and an adventure.
