Description: This book combines a didactic review of the different modalities used in breast imaging with an atlas of the imaging appearance of common breast pathology. It updates the first edition published in 2003.
Purpose: According to the editor, the purpose is to familiarize readers with the typical imaging presentation of breast pathology and help them develop a systematic approach to classifying breast imaging findings. The later chapters provide an atlas of diagnostic imaging findings in breast disease, incorporating not only mammography and ultrasound, but also MRI and PET.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing radiologists who specialize in breast imaging. Certainly, the sections covering PET and PET/CT would be useful to this audience, who are often not as familiar with this modality as they are with mammography, ultrasound, and breast MRI. Some of the other material may be familiar to those with extensive subspecialty experience in breast imaging. This book might prove even more useful to general radiologists, breast imaging fellows, and residents.
Features: The first four chapters describe the applications of each of the four modalities predominantly used for imaging of breast disease (mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and PET-CT). The book emphasizes the importance of integrating information from different kinds of imaging tests to optimize characterization of and evaluation for extent of disease in breast carcinoma. The explanations of basic imaging techniques and applications are clear and concise and would serve as a good introduction for residents. Subsequent chapters (with the exception of the final two) begin with an algorithm, followed by multiple examples of the different categories outlined in the algorithm. The illustrations and annotations are uniformly excellent and easy to understand. The book is organized much like a series of lectures, each elucidating the decision-making process involved in classifying breast findings and making management recommendations. This format is very helpful if used in this fashion, but might be less useful to readers looking for a standalone atlas focused only on multiple imaging examples of each pathologic entity.
Assessment: Overall, this book effectively demonstrates how to synthesize the imaging findings for various breast pathologic entities from multiple modalities with a practical algorithm geared toward making decisions about management. The ability to incorporate the findings from multiple imaging modalities into the assessment of breast disease has increasingly become necessary for breast imagers. Though not a classic teaching file of cases, the book, with the combination of decision-making algorithms and examples of imaging findings, successfully teaches many of the real-life skills used by experienced breast imagers.
