Overview

Murder Bay by David R. Horwitz

Ben Carey, a young police sergeant in 1957 Washington, D.C., must uncover the dark secrets of a decaying old house or be driven mad by them. Though newly promoted in his job, his personal life is in shambles. So he throws himself into a strange investigation, and as he peels back the layers of time, he discovers greed, deception, love, jealousy, and murder.

Alternating between the prosperous 1950s and an America torn by Civil War, MURDER BAY is a supernatural mystery that spans eras and the gulf dividing what can and cannot be explained.

About the Author

David R. Horwitz was born in Washington, D.C., the son of a D.C. police officer and a piano teacher. In 2000 he and his wife, Deirdre, moved from Washington to rural Minnesota. He programmed computers by day and wrote on nights and weekends. David's dream of writing full-time ended when he died in 2004, but he left behind the manuscripts that would become the Ben Carey mysteries.

I highly recommend this novel. The story is very well crafted and wonderfully written. The characters and fleshed out and very believable in their actions. It was one of those books you don't want to put down until you finish and when you do finish are sorry that it ended.

Police Sgt. Ben Carey heads a new division in the DC police department which seeks grants from the Federal Government, but the old mansion he and his men use as an office is haunted by ghosts from the Civil War.  Able to see them, Ben realizes he has a really cold case to solve— the murder of Union soldier, Mordechai Finkel.  The narrative switches between Ben and the characters during the Civil War to add depth to the story of the ghosts.  Nicely written with a great deal of research in both periods.

Even though this is light reading, the storyline kept me guessing and surprised me with the ending.  Really enjoyed this mystery.

I could not put this book down. I had the most enjoyable day lost in this story. I am so sad this talented author is gone and there will be no more Ben Carey mysteries.

Enjoyed the story and characters. A twist of modern and historic, haunting and macabre.

The solving of a 90 year old mystery is an enjoyable read. The author finds the proper way to trace the dual timelines and close the cold case. Recommend this anyone who enjoys the historical mysteries. J M Lydon

You will do two things, altogether they will make twelve points. 1: the abc pattern. There will be letters missing, aand those letters make a word. All letters used once, post that word in your proof box. Abc's: abcfgijklmnopqrsuvwxyz. Find the word. 2: go to LightClan or WaterClan and steal a kit. Bonous: remember that kit you got from the orphanage? Abandon it at 'scary' result one with the kit you stole for ten extra points.
