Overview

Murder by Misrule (A Francis Bacon Mystery, #1) by Anna Castle

Brilliant Francis Bacon is at a loss -- and in danger.

Francis Bacon is charged with investigating the murder of a fellow barrister at Gray's Inn. He recruits his unwanted protégé Thomas Clarady to do the tiresome legwork. The son of a privateer, Clarady will do anything to climb the Elizabethan social ladder.

Bacon's powerful uncle Lord Burghley suspects Catholic conspirators of the crime, but other motives quickly emerge. Rival barristers contend for the murdered man's legal honors and wealthy clients. Highly-placed courtiers are implicated as the investigation reaches from Whitehall to the London streets.

Bacon does the thinking; Clarady does the fencing. Everyone has something up his pinked and padded sleeve. Even the brilliant Francis Bacon is at a loss — and in danger — until he sees through the disguises of the season of Misrule.

"Castle's characters brim with zest and real feeling." — Kirkus Starred Review.

This is the best book I have read on my nook in years. I will happily pay for the remaining books in the series.

Enjoyable murder mystery set in actual places in "Olde England". Some of the main characters are real even though the story line is fiction. Lots of suspects and plenty of intrigue with the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation during the 1500's.

Learned more about the period through described beliefs, initial Puritan life styles and worship, than previously known by me. Interesting insights on the various colleges around London and the royal court. Very interesting.

Murder by Misrule by Anna Castle Sir Francis Bacon is entrusted to solve the murder of a fellow Gray's Inn Barrister, Tobias Smythson. He recruits the help of Mr. Smythson's first-year law students: Thomas Clarady, Allen Trumpington, Stephen Delabere, and Benjamin Whitt -- whom he decides to take as his apprentices. There is a witness, Clara Goossens, but she comes with a foreign accent and many mysteries that Tom -- who falls for her -- has a hard time deciphering. As a second, then a third murder occurs, the plot thickens and the suspicion is entangled with Catholic conspiracies in Elizabethan 16th century England. Time is running out and Mr. Bacon must solve the murder before he becomes the next victim. The prose is attempted to be narrated from the third person point of view, but the author is not successful in her attempt. So we get confused and sometimes bored at her prolonged narrative. I enjoyed the Elizabethan storyline but wished someone would have helped her with the editing.

I like historical fiction. You get to live in a different time. This book was ok. Some of the historical details could have been expanded and at times I was not sure where the story was going. The characters were well developed, but she did lose one of the students and they sort of disappeared without reason. There were a few surprises of character development and it would be interesting to see how these characters grow in future books. The murders were simple, but in 1589, when the story is set, they did not have to elaborate. How the evidence was gathered and details put together worked. The murder plot line of the story worked and also how it was wrapped up. I would recommend this book to others. It was a nice read.

This is an excellent story taking you back in time. The characters are well developed and story line is fluent. There were a few parts that threw me for a loop, which made the story even better. I plan to read additional Francis Bacon mystery series.

This book on the Nook is actually Death by Disputation with the cover of Murder by Misrule. I read the whole thing and then came over to purchase the second book in the series and the description of the second book was of the book I just read, and the description of the first book was of one I hadn't read. This is pretty sloppy production.
