About the Author

Margaret loves murder mysteries—the sooner the corpse appears, the better! Whether it's a cozy, a paranormal, or romantic suspense, she likes to watch the puzzle unravel. If not reading crime fiction, she's writing her own mysteries. Margaret's debut novel features a lawyer who turns into a witch during her first murder case. When characters can kill with spells, the ways to dispatch a victim dramatically increase. Margaret used to practice law, so she knows a lawyer can transform into a witch. Margaret shares a home in Phoenix with her husband and their seven rescue dogs. A mix of breeds from pit bulls to terriers, the pack walks their owners every day. When not engrossed in murder, Margaret tries new recipes, grows weird succulents, and goes bird watching with her husband. They've enjoyed sights that range from hawks soaring for prey to baby birds squawking to be fed.

Petra is a criminal defense attorney who is also a witch, staying at Disclaimer Ranch to learn how to master and control her magical powers. Pretty boy Cullen dies while having a dispute with Petra concerning a modelling contract. Residents at the ranch accuse Petra's magical powers going haywire, killing Cullen. Now Petra needs her own criminal defense attorney. Cullen's ghost wants Petra to investigate who murdered him, but then there is another victim. I am a prolific reader of cozy mysteries but I usually stray away from paranormal mysteries as I don't particularly care for that genre. However, I did think Murder Lifts the Spirits was very creative. I imagined all the animation of the magic and wizardry from movies and TV shows that were similar. For example, The Disclaimer Ranch reminded me of the first X-Men movie where the mutants lived in the X-Mansion with Professor Xavier in command. When those with magical powers were trapped in another non-human form or captured where they were unable to use their powers, I was often picturing scenes from the TV show Bewitched. One thing that I did have issue with this book was the large number of characters. It was often difficult to keep track of all these characters; those at Disclaimer Ranch and those at Pioneer House. I didn't realize until much later that this was the second book in the series. If I had read the first book previously, I might had a better grasp of the canon characters. There was also a touch of romance, which I also enjoy in my cozies. The romance was very sweet. I received an ARC from the publisher for purposes of an unbiased review.

Enjoyable read. Good story.

I like the plot but like her first book the sentence structure is odd, not how we would speak. Very good story with good twists.

Attorney Petra Rakowitz has been spending time at the Disclaimer Ranch learning about her newly discovered magical skills. When a murder occurs, she must put all of her experience as a lawyer and new magical skills to the test. A delightful cozy mystery with some paranormal influences. I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced mystery.

Really loved this one - there are getting to be more of the "magical" books on the market and I think this one had a fresh and slightly different take to some of the rules and how they interact with the "regular" world. This was the 2nd in a series, but very stand-alone and I didn't need to read the 1st one to catch on. Well written, good story, great plot twists. Can't wait for another one.

I’m conflicted on this book. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still worthy of a read and four stars at least. The author thought of so much in writing it. I just felt overwhelmed with all the details and characters. That being said, I feel like if I had read the first one I would’ve had a better understanding of the characters, at least the heroine. Others may not feel like this. I do plan to read the first one. This book had well developed characters and some really great imagination on the creation of it all. It was a fun adventure.
