Murder On St. Nicholas Avenue is the eighteenth book in the A Gaslight Mystery series. I really enjoy this series and this book provides the reader of this series with an interesting change of pace. Sarah and Frank Malloy have recently gotten married and are on their honeymoon. When there is a knock on the door of the Malloy at the Malloy’s home, Maeve finds a Mrs. O’Neill at the door. Mrs. O’Neill, a friend of the Malloy family, wants Malloy to help her daughter, Una, who has been charged with murdering her husband. Una has not talked since she was found holding her husband’s body in the family home. Maeve realizes she is not the investigator that Sarah and Frank are, but hopes that she can do enough to a least get the police to widen their investigation. As it turns, she is able to get Mr. and Mrs. Decker, Sarah’s parents and Gino Donatelli, a member of the NYPD to help her delve into the life of Una’s husband. I was particularly pleased that Ms. Thompson wrote this book and let these minor characters in previous books take over center stage. It’s always been enjoyable for me to follow these characters in the previous books and was really exciting to see these characters come into their own. Will be looking forward to future books in this wonderful series to see if they continue to shine. Will also be looking forward to the return of Mr. and Mrs. Malloy, the newlyweds.

If you’re a fan of Historical mysteries, the Gaslight series may be just what you are looking for. While I have enjoyed a few, I will admit, historical mysteries aren’t my favorites. My brain seems better suited for strong female leads of present time rather than more demur ladies of the past. That being said, I am happy to say that in the Gaslight Mysteries, has not just one, but several strong females. While this series normally centers around characters Frank Malloy and Sarah Brant. However, having married in the previous book, the Malloy’s are on their honeymoon. Author Victoria Thompson uses this in MURDER ON ST. NICOLAS AVENUE to bring to the forefront, Mauve and Gino. Readers of this series will know these characters from past installments. Having already established a wonderful team with Frank and Sarah, author Thompson shows Mauve and Gino more than competent to take the lead. This was an interesting mystery. I found myself really getting drawn into the story. A young woman thrown into prison for murdering her husband, and her distraught mother desperate to find help in proving her daughter innocent. All through the intriguing investigation I looked forward to learning each new detail. I had some moments when I thought I knew all, but I ended up falling short when the reveal came. Victoria Thompson is an impressive author and certainly knows how to build suspense in her writing. Her fans are going to enjoy this fresh look into the series, even as they miss Frank and Sarah. But no worries, you can’t keep the Malloys away forever!

This is a fun book. It was great to get a book that concentrated on the secondary characters rather than the main ones. While Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt are on their honeymoon, Maeve( the nursemaid) decides to help solve a murder. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story. It is a fun book. I really look forward to the next one with everyone working together.

Victoria Thompson takes a precarious step away from her central characters in this latest novel. The minor characters are given an opportunity to run with the story in the absence of the lead actors. Sarah Brandt, now Mrs. Frank Malloy, and Frank Mallory are on their honeymoon in Europe, and as the saying goes "while the cat is away, the mice will play", minor characters run with the story. What a delightful time with Maeve, Dino, Felix Decker, and Elizabeth Decker! A friend of Frank's mother runs crying to the new Malloy house with a terrible story concerning her daughter. The daughter has married a Mr. Randolph Pollock, a seemingly wealthy man, but after a few months, Mr. Pollock is murdered and Una Pollock sits in a stupor, cradling his head. Una is thrown into prison, and all believe her murdered her husband. Maeve and Dino, with the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. Decker, rush to find the actual killer. The story reads very quickly, as these four new detectives race around town gathering information. I thoroughly enjoyed this quartet of detectives, and hope to see them more often.

Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue is a bonus book in the Gaslight Mystery series and it is a very good bonus. Thank you Victoria Thompson for this great Christmas gift. Frank and Sarah are off on their honeymoon but that does not stop the mysteries that arrive on their door step. Maeve and Gino join forces with Mr. and Mrs. Decker to solve what turns out to be more than a murder. This book is great fun. I loved the scenes between Mr . and Mrs. Decker. She thinks she is keeping her involvement in this and previous cases from him but it turns out he has his suspicions. There are some really laugh out loud moments when reading the dialog between the two. This is a great set up for furture books. We know more Maeve, Gino, Mrs. Decker and of course Mr. Decker. A great side note. Mr Decker did not realize his life was boring until he started helping solve some of the cases. I look forward to these four have a more important role in future books. It will add a new dimension to one of my favorite series.
