Dr. David Brooks prefers guns and sleuthing to doctoring; in fact, he just solved five murders in two weeks (Murders at Hollings General). The dust has barely settled before someone kills his new client, head of Brent Institute, a genome research company. Since a dead canary is left on the victim's doorstep, Brooks assumes the worst: the Mafia has struck. The plot (as well as reader disbelief) escalates from here, with rival international gangs slugging it out over mysterious activities at the institute. Short on subtlety and transition but long on action and adventure, this is an optional choice for larger collections. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
