Music and Lyrics [Original Soundtrack]

Rather than just slapping together some pre-existing, heartwarming tunes, the soundtrack to the songwriters-in-love rom-com Music and Lyrics features custom-written songs that lovingly send up the sounds of '80s and 2000s pop. In fact, pop is so important to Music and Lyrics that "Pop!" is the name of the '80s group that Hugh Grant's character is a former member of, and Pop!'s sound is a fusion of New Romantics like ABC and Spandau Ballet mixed with a healthy dose of Wham!'s giddy but more mainstream new wave. On "Pop! Goes My Heart," Grant's voice bears an uncanny resemblance to ABC's suave frontman, Martin Fry. Meanwhile, "Meaningless Kiss" -- which was penned by Fountains of Wayne's chameleon-like songwriter, Adam Schlesigner -- is a terrific send-up of Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" that works because it gets all of the nuances right instead of going for obvious parody. Schlesinger also penned the soundtrack's main love song "Way Back into Love," which sounds especially charming in the demo duet between Grant and Drew Barrymore. Music and Lyrics also takes affectionate aim at the sound of 2000s pop with two Britney Spears-esque songs: with its twangy guitars and Middle Eastern-inspired melody, "Buddha's Delight" plays like a more demure version of "Toxic," while "Slam" nods to the Neptunes' slinky, percussive production on "I'm a Slave 4 U." Even with the inclusion of two songs that weren't created for the movie (the Sounds' "Tony the Beat" and Teddybears' "Different Sound"), Music and Lyrics feels more like the soundtrack from a musical than a romantic comedy, and only a few of the songs ("Bootytown," "Don't Write Me Off") feel like obvious parodies -- these are the best compliments that you can pay to this kind of project.

Thank you Hugh Grant and Drew Berrymore for making such a warm and funny movie. The romance was subtle, yet compelling, and the comedy was just right, not over the edge ridiculous. Music and Lyrics is a simple movie that makes it easy to escape the every day chaos of life, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves into the lighthearted romance of Drew and Hugh. The song "Way Back to You" has a very catchy melody, and who knew that Hugh Grant and Drew Berrymore could sing. You will find yourself humming the tune long after the show is over. Especially pleasing was the lack of profanity and the "f" word. What a pleasure to not hear such trash. This is a cute family movie and a long time over due.

I loved this movie and soundtrack. The songs are catchy and fun. Hugh Grant does an outstanding job with the vocals and he and Drew have great chemistry. The last soundtrack I bought and really liked was Chariots of Fire. I highly recommend this one as well!

Music and Lyrics is a delight from start to finish! I can't remember when I left a movie theater in such an upbeat mood. The music makes the movie, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the music CD. From the "toe-tapping" "Pop Goes My Heart" to the memorable "Way Back Into Love", the music is fresh as well as catchy. I can't get it out of my head. Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant are wonderful together. Their rendition of "Way Back Into Love" is the highlight of the album. I highly recommend this album for music lovers everywhere!

You can not go wrong with the Sound Track and the movie. I have
watched this movie at least 10 times, and I am still in love with
it. Hugh Grant is a genius as I read in his online biography that he
learned to play all the instruments he uses before he made the movie!
He gives a magnificant performance and Drew Barrymore was not an
actress whose career I was following until this movie. She is
perfect and sweet and adorable as Sophie Fisher. See the Movie and
then buy the sound track.

This is my movie of 2007. Casting is superb, can't be beat. Music video would be a top 10 smash hit in 1984, hands down. Campbell Scott and Hugh are A+ as the leads of Pop! and it works...BIG! Movie flows evenly and swiftly through every scene. All the songs are repeatable, which is my highest compliment. "Pop! Goes My Heart" would positively be a top 10 single back in 1984, I lived the 80's music and can tell you that Casey Kasem would be introing that tune at #9 on American Top 40. I like this movie as much as Meet The Parents, City Slickers, Forget's just plain great entertainment! Big thumbs up on Music and Lyrics. Drew is super-sweet, no one could say no to this honey. Hugh is dead-on as the has-been singer...just go buy it!

My husband and I watch this film every time on TV. Then HE begins to hum the tunes for days! So,it may not win awards, yet how often does a basically "chick flick" has the MAN in your Life remembering anything? We like "Flopsy" as we call Mr.Hugh Grant in comedic situations. He is a bit clumsy,(on purpose)but the eyes are quite endearing and oh so forgiving. At least give the music a try.Besides speaking three languages."Flopsy" is quite adept at the piano.Drew Barrymore has a lovely voice. She should have made more contributions besides Miss Bennett.
