During the Shift, sea levels rose and severed Nova Scotia from the mainland. A new government comes into power, one that doesn’t tolerate mutants spawned by the Shift. Graham, a government employee, visits his sister Autumn on the newly created island. She’s been living alone and living healthy amongst the mutants. He wants to know how, and he’s won’t stop until he gets what he wants.
“You are indeed fortunate. It’s rare to meet a human who hasn’t been changed by the Shift.” Terese glanced at Graham. “Organs of the young and old have been breaking down, becoming dysfunctional.”
“Like most families.” She felt Terese’s cold eyes shift to watch her swallow the biscuit. A foreign taste lingered in her mouth, and she ran her tongue across her top teeth. She took a drink of tea to wash it away. “Are these day olds, brother? You aren’t going cheap on me, are you?”
She watched his smile. It ebbed and flowed as if he couldn’t make up his mind whether to appreciate the joke.
Suddenly, the clock on the wall struck four. Autumn glared at it. “It hasn’t worked for months.” She had used her last batteries a year ago. It didn’t matter; she had no use to mark time. She stared wide-eyed at her brother. “A broken clock striking the hour is a sure sign of a death!”
