My Amercian Transformation: Reminiscences from a Time of Wonder
S. Mena arrived in the United States from Cuba at age 11 in 1969. His is a rich narrative of an adolescent's escape from a oppressive culture under communism, to finding the freedoms that led him to his many discoveries about our American culture. Mena's observations and recollections offer a keen perspective on what he aptly calls his "American Transformation." It is a powerful, yet gentle, read that will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. A wonderful addition to any family library.
"I'm very pleased to have this book published. It has been years in the making. Probably the most emotionally taxing writing I have ever done. It details leaving Cuba as an 11-year-old and the painful experiences suffered by my parents that caused us to leave. Those were difficult things to write about, but a story that needed to be told. The other chapters dealing with transitioning into the American mainstream, while humorous at times, are indelible memories of living the American experience as an adolescent in this land I chose to love and adopt as my own."
