Overview

My Brother, My Sister and I by Yoko Kawashima Watkins

Thirteen-year-old Yoko and her older brother and sister live in abject poverty in Japan at the end of World War II. When the clog factory warehouse they call home is destroyed by fire, their lives become even more desperate, particularly when Yoko's sister, Ko, is injured and must be hospitalized and her brother, Hideyo, is accused of murder. "Beautifully direct and emotionally honest."--Publishers Weekly, starred review.

My Brother, My Sister, and I is a outstanding book. It has action and drama and even some mystery! I'm not really a reading type of person but when I started this book I could NOT put it down! I was excellent. This book is a sequel to So Far From The Bamboo Grove and that was just as good as this one!

I had to read her first book, 'So Far From the Bamboo Grove' for school and so did my sister when she was in the eight grade. I really liked that book. In some places it was funny, in others it almost made me cry, like when Mother died. Shes coming to visit my school soon and i cant wait. I want to see if this book is better than her last. LONG LIVE YOKO KAWASHIMA WATKINS!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~Claudia

You have to read this book! Its about a korean family living durjng world war ll and also whats so ironic is that this is a book i have to read and im also korean!! Yea korean people are beast! And a factoid to those that dont know where the koreas are, irs between japan and china and the land is included in the continent of asia. If you still dont kniw what i'm talking about, then..............look it up. Its really not that hard to imagine where the koreas are and korea is divided into north korea and south korea so people call it the koreas or say north/south korea..... i hope this is good info for those who read this book!!!!!!

Hideyo, Ko, and Yoko's bravery is remarkable and inspiring. Watkins' first person narrative gives life to war-torn and postwar Japan. Many of Yoko's father's sayings are still good advice today. The emotions and vividness of this novel are overwhelming.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I so admired Yoko's courage, humbleness, and work ethic. I could not put this book down, and I'm 23. I highly recommend it for everyone!
