Overview

My December

From the Alanis Morissette-reminiscent lead single, "Never Again" ("I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green") to the aptly titled "Judas" ("After we've been through so much / How could you let me down"), betrayal is a recurring theme throughout Kelly Clarkson's edgier third album, My December. Despite the pre-release drama -- Clarkson canceled her tour, fired her manager, and was publicly chastised by music impresario Clive Davis for the record's rock leanings and self-penned material -- My December is a bold and admirable record. Throughout, Clarkson's alternately smoky and soaring pipes are in fine form and full of plenty of Pat Benatar-reminiscent angst. Granted, there's nothing here as catchy as Breakaway's cheery kiss-off, "Since U Been Gone," but both the lyrics and musical arrangements are more compelling: "One Minute" is a percolating, dance pop jam; "Hole" is rife with tight, rhythmic guitar riffs; and "Sober" is a haunting, acoustic guitar-assisted ballad. Thanks to her season of discontent, Clarkson blossoms from an American Idol darling to a rock 'n' roll angel.

For songs when you feel you have to punch somebody. Kelly delivers and then some. I don't get the controversy over the song, Judas. I loved that song and I knew what she was talking about I have been used by people like that too. But a good album for the pop fan or girl with a broken heart and doesn't want to cry anymore or wants music to cry to or think to. It is beautiful and her at her best as always. With her dealing with the pain of betraying exs, fans, and friends, and major producers, who could blame her. I loved it, very powerful and moving.

I am a huge AI fan, and have followed Kelly since the first season. This album shows Yet another side of Kelly's singing...My favorite song is "Sober", and she sounds a lot like Norah Jones, the song is incredible!! I am a grandmother, and the rest of the songs haunt me. I listen to it over and over, and am getting hooked on it while I am stuck in traffic in my car. This CD is good for reflecting on hurtful breakups from the past, the hope of love now and the future, and will haunt you so much you will want to play it over and over again.

Kelly has finally gotten the chance to break out and do what she wants with her music. She is not an Amy Lee copy cat,she wrote a more edgy cd because that's where she was in her life at that point! leave the poor girl alone, because she ROCKS!!!

Kelly Clarkson, a house hold names. Heres my ratings. Never Again- 5/5 Everyone knows this song. And is a true fan favorite. Kelly's vocals come all together coming towards the middle/end. The video, her voice, and Kelly herself, is awesome in this song. One Minute- 4/5 Love it, very energetic song. Great beat, great voice, definetly, one of my favorites. Hole- 4/5 Love this song! It is just so rock. So personal, so raw. Our true Kelly! Great song! Sober- 10/5 My favorite song off My December. It's just way too beauitful. To me when I hear it, it's a Hear Me with Because Of You kinda thing. Liek it is very soft and beauitful, then changes to loud beauitful vocals. Dont Waste Your Time- 5/5 Another one of my favorites, when ever I hear it, I think Kelly could have so much fun with this video. She sings it great. Judas- 4/5 Good song. I think it'll be a popular dance song. VERY, energetic. And I can NOT wait, till Kelly Clarkson sings it live. Haunted- 7/5 I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! It's meaning is so beauitful. Kelly wrote this song after ger friend she grew up with, comitted sucide. I think this video would be like Never except, backwards. Kelly would be the one getting Haunted. As much as I would love to have this as a single. Not sure it will. Be Still- 10/5 Beauitful! and as you see I'll just keep puting 5 otta 5. It's just a MUST buy. Go support Kelly, and buy!

After hearing the bad reveiws by the critics, I was unsure of her new alblum, but I got it anyways. I've always been a big Kelly fan, but this is her best album yet. The critics were wrong to say that it isn't as good. I like how she took a stand and did her own thing. Even though it is edgier than her first 2 albums, true Kelly fans will still enjoy her and appriciate the change.

I think that Kelly is one of the bravest, and best, female recording stars of today. The record label did not want her to record these songs, but she did anyway. Did you know she wrote or co-wrote every song on this CD? I'm very proud of Kelly, and wish her the best of luck. I know a lot of people are saying that this CD is just some CD that will just be a bunch of screaming, but from what I've heard, It should be beautiful! Once again, way to go Kelly!

Okay. I know alot of people think that Kelly Clarkson can't rock. Well, she can and this album proves it even more so than the glossy arena-rock of "Breakaway". The album is nothing but pure emotion whether she's bashing an ex on the lead single "Never Again", acknowledging how far she has come in a difficult situation in "Sober", pleading for the presence of a friend who committed suicide in "Haunted", or asking God to stay with her in "Irvine". This has many kinds of songs on it. Some are heavy rock ""Hole", "Haunted"" and some are very soft ""Irvine"" and some are kinda in between ""Chivas" "the hidden song on track 13", "How I Feel", "Maybe"" and there's even some R&B flavor on the soft "Be Still" and the funk-fused "Yeah". This is an awesome album that everyone should give a chance because of how diverse the music is.

The album as a whole is a cohesive unit telling a very personal, yet relatable, story throughout. Mainly, Clarkson comments that life is full of a lot of downers, but there are nonetheless better times when one can really prove one’s perseverance. That said, Clarkson incorporates several tones in reliving tales of betrayal, anger, loneliness, human faults, and times of “picking” the “weeds.” Clarkson and her team masterfully intertwine these traits and others into each song on the album. Yet, the genius behind Clarkson’s lyrics plays a role as well: Clarkson never narrows her songs’ topics, but rather constructs her songs with simpler, easily relatable phrasing. Listeners are not thwarted away from actually conceiving that they know and understand what Clarkson feels and sings. “Never Again”—Clarkson masterfully demonstrates angst with fervor. Her references of sorts to Christian practices (“repent yourself away” and “give me that Sunday school answer”) all the more prove what an ingenious lyricist Clarkson can be after all, the male subject being scorned is now a member of a contemporary Christian band. While these lyrics narrow the song a bit, the remainder of the lyrics remain general, allowing any listener who has been cheated on to easily identify with Clarkson. While the chorus may seem to lack a catchy melody, Clarkson does seem to chant the chorus rather convincingly. “One Minute”—The music and lyrics of this song focus entirely on juxtaposition and high contrast. While the song may seem dark lyrically, Clarkson is actually quite easily discussing the ups and downs of life accordingly, the music itself is rather sing-songy. The music parallels the idea behind the lyrics. While the hook is bare, Clarkson easily covers for that shortcoming through the tremendously addicting chorus. The song remains in listeners’ ears far after the song’s conclusion. “Hole”—The chorus is simple: “There’s a hole/ inside of me/ it’s so [damn] cold/ slowing killing me.” It’s succinct, simple, and easy to remember. What’s more, Clarkson has actually placed “holes” in between each line of the chorus. There are short breaks after each line. The lyrics remain simple, yet detailed enough to sense Clarkson’s sense of emptiness and desire for a new beginning. The rockier edge of the song brings life to the album, even if the subject matter is darker. It’s hard to not bobble your head around while enjoying the music. “Sober”—This song creates a new mood for the album. Clarkson manages to softly, yet powerfully, display one essence of human life: one must drag out the garbage and put in a new, clean bag. The music is captivating, while the lyrics remain inspiring. The entire thesis of the song, and perhaps the album, (I picked all my weeds/ but kept the flowers), breathes new life into listeners, providing hope through the idea that one truly can “wake up” and ditch the negativity in life. Clarkson’s explosive, emotional ending to the song emotes a genuine sense of cleansing that convinces even the most drunk of alcoholics that a better day is to come. “Don’t Waste Your Time”—This is one of Clarkson’s poppy contributions to the album. The song delves into quite general subject matter: bad friends. We’ve all had them, easily making the song relatable for even the must dreary of listeners. While the song doesn’t get as explosive at the chorus as perhaps I would have preferred, Clarkson’s captivating voice is able to dig the song out of that ditch the ending of the song is the most convincing part of the song. No this is not what helped Kelly win AI - it's a million times better. It's got raw emotion, it's real and authentic, not too common in the music biz or even the world. People who are looking for commercial songs or a copy of Breakaway, look elsewhere. Real songs are not for you. For the editor of the popular magazine, I bet you are not an editor of music because you obviously can not appreciate real music. You could work for Clive Davis. Kelly does seem to have some similarities to Amy Lee but maybe it's just the fact that they can make you feel like they're in the room singing to only you - an indication of a spectacular artist.

"My December" is nothing like the awesome, pop schlock of "Breakaway". But that's a good thing. She didn't just release a sequel. She release a more, depressed, angrier album with eclectic songs. No song is like the other. There's even a funk song called "Yeah". The best songs are the somber, heartfelt "Sober", the bare, melancholic and gutwrenching "Irvine", the haunting "Haunted", the potential radio hit "Judas", the gentle and seductive sounding "Be Still", and the hidden track "Chivas". The song "Hole" has a killer hook and i could see it doing well on radio. "How I Feel" would have been a better success on pop radio than "Never Again." It could have lured the "Breakaway" fans in. "One Minute" is also another potential radio song. The verses are kind of weird but the chorus is catchy. I also like "Maybe". It's vulnerable and raw. "Can I Have a Kiss" sounds similar to "Thankful"-her debut album-style rock. My least favorite song is "Don't Waste Your Time". Love the lyrics but it sounds weak. Lifeless.

With a hint of Alanis in a few tracks and a Jewel-feeling in two others tracks, Kelly gives a different feeling in this new album of hers. When "Haunted" starts up, I swear I thought that it was a song by Evanessesce, but as soon as she starts singing, it doesn't sound like a song Amy Lee would sing. The album is nothing like what I tought it would be. I thought that it would have a lot of Rock/Pop songs, like "Never Again" but I was very much mistaken. It sounds nothing like "Thankful" or "Break Away". "One Minute", "Judas", and "How I Feel" start off with a very trance feeling that make you wanna get up and dance. "Hole" and "Haunted" are very rocky hits. "Sober", "Be Still", and "Maybe", you see the true beauty in her voice. "Yeah" has a very country rock style to the music and her voice. "Chivas" has a little of country in her voice as well. And "Irvine" is just real emotional. Don't know how to categorize this song. It's very nice and contains such depth. Overall, I LOVED this CD. There's maybe 3 songs I'm not really crazy about, but it's really good. I love that Kelly doesn't do the same thing over and over again. I hear that she's planning on making her next album country.

I am a huge kelly clarkson fan and I didn't really care for it when i, for the first time, listened to it on the leak. The more i listened to it though, the more i liked it!! It is actually a really excellent album if you give it a chance! You won't be disappointed.. i definetly recommend that you all get it! It is one of those albums that you can't stop listening to!!

I just listened to My December, and cannot believe what a vocal range Kelly has. I am so dissapointed she canceled her tour. I wish she would come near Vermont.

Kelly has done so good so far with her other two albums that this one is sure to be a hit even with all the weird publicity! I love the song Never Again! I can't wait!

The only thing I ask you do when it comes to this record is don't go into it with a clogged mind full of false media and clive davis babble. If you go in with an open mind you'll see what a great record it actually is.

Since I bought My December, I listen to it in my car All the time instead of the radio. I LOVE Sober especially, and LOVE her voice.

I agree her other cd's were awsome. But some title tracks sound weird. I heard all this and that about the cd I'm not sure. I love her don't get me wrong but first I can go on itunes and listen to a clip and see if I want the cd

Not at all what helped her win American Idol or previous CDs... too much copy-cat performances like Amy Lee and not herself.. she screams too many of the lyrics. Atleast she stopped milking her last CD for what it's worth and put out something else.
