This is a true story. In the Spring of 1914, a small group of Sioux Indians and their Chief visited my Great-Grand Father's ranch near Center, Oliver County, North Dakota. The Indians had come on horseback from their temporary camp "a mile-or-so away." Their Chief was the only one wearing a feathered bonnet that day. While five or six other Brave accompanied him.

Christoph F. Skubinna had always allowed the Indians to cross his land. They had always been peaceful enough. But the German-American settlers were still uncomfortable to be around at times. On this occasion, they wanted to borrow a log chain. Which Christoph gladly lent them.

My Grandfather Otto Herman Skubinna was only 10 years old at the time. But it was he whom the Chief pointed his finger directly at and directed him to come to the village at the end of three days and retrieve the log chain ....
