My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster

"McMaster's characters are beautifully drawn and the tension between them is completely smoking... [a] dark, menacing and strangely beautiful world." - RT Book Reviews

Determined to destroy the Echelon she despises, Rosalind Fairchild is on seemingly easy mission. Get in. Uncover the secrets of her brother's disappearance. And get out.

In order to infiltrate the Nighthawks and find their leader, Blue Blooded Sir Jasper Lynch, Rosalind will pose as their secretary. A dangerous mission, but Rosalind is also the elusive Mercury, a leader in the humanist movement.

But she doesn't count on Lynch being such a dangerously charismatic man, challenging her at every turn, forcing her to re-evaluate everything she knows about the enemy. He could be her most dangerous nemesis-or the ally she never dreamed existed.

A stunning, action-filled paranormal romance, Bec McMaster's London Steampunk novels will appeal to fans of Gail Carriger, Kristen Callihan's Darkest London series, and the Blud series by Delilah Dawson.

Enemies to lovers romance - emotional ride from start to finish! I want to give MY LADY QUICKSILVER 6 stars...nahhhhhhh, what the heck - make it 10! I couldn't devour the pages fast enough and I had to put the book down overnight, then spend the next day AT WORK before I could finished the last few chapters!!! Oh, the torture of the enforced wait! OK, now that I have that out of my system, I'll tell you about this book. I'm not going to recount the story, others have done that and you can read the blurb for yourself. MLQ - the characters, the multiple plot threads, the way it ended ... combined it packs one hell of an emotional punch and this was the stand out quality by an absolute mile. Don't think this will be a casual, easy read. MLQ grabs your heartstrings from the opening chapters in the book and only lets up in the last couple. Yes, the ride is THAT intense. You do get the occasional breather, but the reprieves don't last long. I loved the world-building. I got to see more of the Nighthawks, a group that intrigued in HEART OF IRON (Bk #2). Bec McMaster has created a solid, well-thought out world I can easily envisage, and returning to the streets of London, I fell right back into step beside the characters, even though it'd been months since I'd read HEART OF IRON. The plot threads - the ongoing conflict between the Echelon and other races, the power plays of the Blueblood Houses, the uneasy truce between the Echelon & Scandanavian wulfvern clans - they were threaded so smoothly into the main storyline, present but hovering in the background, tension growing, foreshadowing events to come. But as I said, the stand out quality of this story was the emotional punch. Mercury/Rosalind and Lynch are characters with multiple layers and the depths to their personalities. Their romance is an enemies to lovers struggle and it was painful yet a pure pleasure to watch them overcome their mistrust and fears and scars. They both have tormented pasts and their actions have been dictated by those events for a very long time, and made them who they are today. I loved seeing each of them grow and develop. And without giving away the ending, I have to say McMaster resolved what I thought an impossible quandry - I couldn't see a way for Mercury & Lynch to have their happily ever after and I did try to work it out before I got there, yet it was only in one of the final scenes between Mercury and another character in the prison wagon that I suspected anything of how it was going to end!!! The satisfaction of the final confrontation between Lynch, the Prince Consort and Mercury was awesome and satisfying. If you love an emotionally powerful, character driven romance, then MY LADY QUICKSILVER is the book to read. I highly recommend it!

In a desperate attempt to find her brother, Rosalind Fairchild decides the best way to discover what happened to him is to apply for the position of secretary to Sir Jasper Lynch (leader of the nighthawks). Entering the enemies den with only her wits to protect her, she quickly discovers that the black and white vision of the world she created is all shades of gray... I have to admit, I was a little hesitant about this book veering away from previously featured main characters. I did miss that none of them played a pivotal role in My Lady Quicksilver but in the end...I still completely and utterly loved this book! Bec McMaster weaves a fabulous tale, with each twist and turn you get pulled deeper into her storytelling web. The characters are genuine with detailed backgrounds that envelop you into their plights. Insurmountable odds, an epic romance, facing the ultimate sacrifice, McMaster's writing genius brilliantly shines through. Reviewed by Aubrey Review originally posted on Romancing the Book Book provided by NetGalley Steampunk is the genre that has me captivated and fascinated. I’m amazed at the imagination of the authors. Building worlds that are so different and filled of machines and inventions you would never be able to think of. My Lady Quicksilver is no exception. I was pulled in from the first page even though I was very much confused at what was going on. I went and bought the first two books of the series and will read them in the hopes of gaining more of an understanding of the world that McMaster created. My confusion did not take away from the story line and would still recommend the book to others but I do think if you read the books in order you would be better off. One of the things that I like so much about this genre is that the romance is not always the front and center of the story. It is woven within the social commentary and the world building. It all comes together nicely and makes you want the world to be real and not something in a book. Rosalind and Lynch do not disappoint. They are mostly enemies but things seem to change and we get to see a different side to both of them. They are definitely a couple you would not think would come together. Lynch wants Rosalind killed and Rosalind is playing the dual role of herself and Mercury the “humanist”. I will be definitely reading any future books in the series and look forward to reading the first two books. I gave the book 4 stars because of my initial confusion of what was going on. Otherwise this book was fast paced and kept me wanting to read quicker to find out what was going to happen.

Rosalind Fairchild, aka Mercury is on a mission to find and save her younger brother. She is the leader of the humanists and has to find a way to gain access into the Nighthawks base to see if there is a lead on where her brother might be. Disguising herself, she takes a job as a secretary to Sir Jasper Lynch, the head of the Nighthawks. She enters into the group thinking Lynch is a vampire that is against everything she believes in. Yet her mindset begins to change as she joins Lynch on investigations and he protects her from several dangerous situations. Jasper is the leader of the Nighthawks, he investigates crimes against Blue Bloods (aka vampires). His mission throughout the book besides investigating murders is to find the elusive Mercury. Mercury leads the Humanists and Jasper believes is responsible for a bombing that killed a lot of people. As Rosalind and Jasper grow closer, I couldn't help wonder how this would play out when the truth was revealed. My Lady Quicksilver drew me in from the first page and wouldn't let me go. Their world was dangerous with the Bluebloods and humanists against each other, but full of intrigue. The characters were fleshed out nicely, and I found myself enjoying the main characters as well as the secondary. I highly recommend the London Steampunk series, and will be picking up the rest of the series in the near future.

I couldn’t put it down. There are dangerous encounters, mysteries, romance, blood drinkers, (blue bloods), weres, (of a sort), and one tantalizing twist after another. I loved the characters from the first chapter to the last. A fantastic read!
