Reviewed by Willow (Age 7) for Reader Views Kids (7/17) “My Little Angel” by Sherrill S. Cannon is about a little angel who is always on a girl’s shoulder. At night she sleeps on the girl’s head. The angel cared for the little girl too. What I liked most about this story is that there’s always an angel beside the little girl. I liked that there were no bad guys in the book, and that it was easy to read. I really liked the art and one day I know I can draw this well. My favorite is the page when she’s in the car because her head is bigger than her body. It makes me laugh. There was nothing in the book I didn’t like, but it was too easy for me to read and I have other books that are similar. I would recommend this book to younger kids like my brother because it’s not for kids my age. It’s too easy for me to read. Like the girl in this book, I feel I have an angel with me too who gives me good ideas. I feel like Jesus gave her to me. Dad’s Comments This is a book that my daughter did not have a lot to say about because it was a very simple-to-read book. This is a book that she does read on occasion. Even after completing her review and despite her comments about being easy to read, I feel she really enjoys reading it. I like when books end with questions and activities. In this book, I didn’t notice them at first (since they come after the acknowledgements section), but now that I see them, I’m glad they are there. The author hid her other book covers throughout the book, so there’s a “Where’s Waldo” like mini-game. Additionally, she offers “What” and “Now What?” questions about the book and ends with questions the reader can use to apply some of the important concepts from the book (wearing a seatbelt, staying close to a parent, pet ownership, etc.). It is nice, too, that 50% of the cost of the author’s books is used to help find a cure for Juvenile Myositis, an incurable autoimmune disease. I’d never even heard of this before reviewing this book with my daughter, so I’m glad to have had the opportunity to learn about this through the author’s efforts. Overall, I recommend “My Little Angel” by Sherrill S. Cannon as a good book with a good lesson.

Award-winning author Sherrill S. Cannon is at it again with her newest book, My Little Angel, telling a delightful story about a little girl and her guardian angel. The star of our adventure, a sweet little girl (we never learn her name), tells the reader about her very special friend, Angela, who just happens to be her guardian angel. Angela sits on the girl's shoulder and is dressed is a light blue dress with matching shoes, a halo, and white, almost translucent, wings. Angela always wears a big smile, and sparkling light seems to follow her wherever she goes. The little girl talks about all the wonderful things her guardian angel does. For example, She helps keep me safe as I'm walking to school, Reminding me always to follow the rules. She makes me look both ways when crossing the street, And she makes sure I'm carful where I put my feet. The author takes the reader through a full day of events, at home, at school, even getting ready for bed, with the guardian angel constantly at the girl's side. Angela reminds the girl of many important things too, from brushing her teeth in the morning, saying "Thank you," "Excuse me," and "Please," to helping her say her prayers at night. If she's afraid, Angela is there to console her, and remind her to "Think of others, be helpful and kind." As soon as you read the first line of My Little Angel, you'll know you've opened a good book: Angela sits on my shoulder and glows - Whatever I do or think, Angela knows... The story, written in a nice-flowing rhyme, tells a sweet story that also helps impart life lessons (manners, caring for others) to young readers. Like the other books by Sherrill Cannon, this one is illustrated by Kalpart, a company that has a reputation for creating delightful images for books. Again, Kalpart does not disappoint as the drawings are vibrant and fun and are a perfect compliment to the story. At the back of the book the author has included "Special Notes" that ask children to a) hunt and find images of different book covers in the story; b) answer questions about their own safety habits; and c) answer questions about the story. Finally, if you purchase the author's books from the website sbpra.com/curejm, 50% of the sales will be donated to help find a cure for Juvenile Myositis - a win-win for everybody! Quill says: My Little Angel is a wonderful story for little ones who will love reading about Angela, a guardian angel, and dreaming up what their own guardian angel might look like and do to help them.

My Little Angel is such a delightful children’s book told in rhyme. I love to read stories in rhyme such as Dr. Seuss books, etc, because they’re so fun. My grandchildren not only enjoy this type of book but they are learning good principles. A story about an angel on one’s shoulder is such a fun idea for children. All of the messages in Sherrill’s books are full of wisdom.

In Sherrill S. Cannon’s latest children’s picture book, “My Little Angel,” her characteristic and lovely rhyming verse shines through. A little girl has a guardian angel named Angela sitting on her shoulder keeping her safe, reminding her of her manners, and pointing her in the right direction in countless other ways. Young readers will enjoy Cannon’s lively rhythmic poetic style and Kalpart’s colorful and vivid illustrations as they learn right from wrong, good from bad, and all kinds of other tidbits, from the tiny angel. This book will also help children know they are surrounded by people (and angels!) who love them and want them to succeed in life.
