Overview

Journalist and memoirist Susan Allen Toth brings her special England vivdly to life as she recalls her many trips there over the years, where she explored the countryside, traveled both second-class and in luxury, theatre-hopped, hunted for ghosts, and honeymooned. Humorous, bittersweet, and wonderfully eccentric, this is a delightful remembrance to be savored by those who love to travel or just dream of it.
"I love MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH ENGLAND. It is written clearly and with a understanding that far supasses any feeling of condescension or superiority or general quaintness among the natives, all of which I detect in books about other countries."
M.F.K. Fisher

Very nice indeed. Not quite Bill Bryson but still a nice addition to my own love affair with England.

If you've travelled to England or plan on, if you love scones, enjoy driving along narrow roads with tall hedgerows, know the joys of walking on the crowded streets of London, this is the book for you. But I warn you, it will make you want to call your travel agent and book your next trip over the water immediately!

I bought this book years ago when I had never set foot in England and all I had was yearning and little money. I wrote to Susan and told her how much I enjoyed the book. To my surprise she wrote back! She told me, 'you will surely get to England some day'. I have been there twice now and have a trip planned for this June. The book is full of wonderful stories, emotions and humor. Even though is not to be used as a travel guide in this day and time, it is a treasure in my library and always will be.
