Overview

An enjoyable read about a young boy growing up during the 2nd World War, but not a children's book. His father is serving his country in Europe and his mother works in a defense plant. The boy and his older brother learn how to live without adult supervision, and boy do they ever!

Well written about life in the 1940's, getting out of trouble, one life threatening event, and learning about life from the characters in the book. Not always as planned.

The polio epidemic plays a part and you will have empathy for the people of that time. The comparison of life then is evident as the town lives through the rationing and life far different than today.

The town is full of characters, described with humor and lots of obstacles in their way as they attempt to elude supervision. Their mother is overwrought by them some of the time, but teaches them to be honest and stay out of trouble. This works some of the time, but not as the mother and boys plan.

Their father, a combat engineer survives D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, is wounded and comes home an alcoholic with PTSD. The mother and the boys attempt to continue life as it should be but the trauma plays a huge part with the abusive father.

Some of the parts will bring tears to your eyes, and others will have you laughing out loud!
