My Pigeon Heart by Denise G. Sleete

You may never have been fond of pigeons in the past, but after reading the Mom's Choice Award and Pinnacle Book Achievement Award winning "My Pigeon Heart" (written for kids ages 5-13), you will look at pigeons in an entirely different light. Meet Midgie, a small orphaned white pigeon. She lives in a big city on a very special building—a beautiful cathedral. Her favorite resting spot is on a ledge next to a stained glass window, where she can hear the cathedral choir sing beautiful hymns and songs about God and Jesus. She describes her hard life in the big city, always searching for food and being hungry, although Sister Margaret Teresa, a kind cathedral nun, sometimes supplies the pigeons with biscuit crumbs. Midgie believes that God and His Son, Jesus, live inside the cathedral. She waits for them to come outside. They never do, so she believes they must have moved. Taking the advice of a song she heard, “Seek Jesus and you shall find Him,” she begins her journey to the country to find Jesus. Trouble and great miracles await her!

This story is wonderfully cute! It is about a pigeon who lives on top of a cathedral. She overhears the church goers talking and singing about God and Jesus and so she decides to go in search of Jesus. This book is a great tool for helping children learn more about the Bible and Jesus. Things that make this book kid-friendly include short chapters, beautiful artwork, simplified language. I also really like the page in the front of the book to personalize the book for a special kid and the reference guide (thesaurus) in the back that further explains key words and phrases from the story. The only thing I did not really like about the book was that I felt it was too packed full of information. Even though the chapters are short, I feel that a lot of time would have to be spent with a child after each chapter just to explain all the information about God and Jesus and the Bible. This book would probably be a great gift for a child between the ages 5 and 11.

This book is a lovely way to teach a young child about Jesus. It may be a little too difficult for a young child to read on their own but it is perfect for a parent to read to their child, which I think is great because it can be a great conversation starter about religion. It is about an orphan pigeon who is seeking Jesus. I love how it shows the importance of all God’s creatures including one that gets a bad rap: pigeons. It is a fun adventure that a child will want to continue to hear and will help them to gain more interest in religion and faith. I agree with one of the other reviewers in that I would have liked more illustrations, that is the one thing I think that could be improved, especially since there are some blank pages. However, it is still a beautiful story and I would recommend this to anyone with a young child.

Midgie is a pigeon on a quest to find Jesus. This is a wonderful children's book that not only teaches children about Jesus, but also many other things such as what it is to be a disciple, Jesus' mother Mary, baptism, forgiveness, and how to become born again and accept Jesus into your life. It is filled with many wonderful things that all Christian children should learn. I felt that this book was well written and would appeal to children. The only thing that I would have liked to have seen was more illustrations. I think that there is so much text, that it needs to have more pictures in order to keep the attention of young children. As a former preschool teacher, I have realized that children's attention spans can be short; however, beautiful pictures can help keep their attention. As far as the story goes, I enjoyed it a lot and think that it would be a wonderful book in anyone's collection.

My Pigeon Heart is a sweet story about a pigeon that lives near a cathedral, who sets out to seek Jesus. She has heard sermons, but has many questions about Jesus and Christianity, much like a child would. Through her adventures, she encounters people and experiences that help her understand the power of faith, forgiveness, and keeping Jesus in your heart. I think that this book is a wonderful catalyst for teaching a child. It brings up questions that children may have and offers simple but profound explanations that can help parents. There is a helpful glossary of terms in the back, that give child friendly definitions for such things as a soul, prayer, angels, etc. I think that this is a well written, entertaining story that has really beautiful illustrations, and also works as a great tool for helping children learn about Jesus.

This hard-back book with large letters would be a wonderful Christmas present for a child to read, or a great book for a parent to read to a younger child; especially if you want to teach a bit about religion.  It is not pushy, just a nice story with great inspiration.  And, to top that off profits from the book sale go to various Children's charities.  I would recommend this book; especially as a Christmas present.
