About the Author

A retired teacher, Cheryl Dannenbring received her BA in elementary and special education from Augustana College in Sioux Falls and her MEQ in teaching emotional and behavioral disorders from the University of Minnesota. She has written one previous children's book with a focus on animals. The inspiration for My Puppy Gave to Me came from a writing-group session and from her own canine experiences. She had a dog that ate a whole table of decorated gingerbread men! Dannenbring enjoys traveling to Iceland, where she has family and friends. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota, with her husband.


Animals and their treasured humans are illustrator Cynthia Kremsner's kind of people--she peppers the stories she illustrates with extra characters to add humor and personality. She studied graphic arts and drama at Santa Rosa Junior College, and national dog rescue organizations have used her illustrations as logos and images for special events. Kremsner lives in Sparks, Nevada with her husband, two musical children, and three dogs, so you can bet that her holidays are filled with plenty of songs and lots of love.

PreS-K—A pet-inspired take on the traditional carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas," this story is written from the perspective of a young girl and tells about her misadventures with her dog. The mischievous pup begins by taking the lights off the Christmas tree and continues to misbehave each day leading up to the big day. Bulbs are broken, ribbons shredded, wrapping paper rumpled, and cookies crumbled. However, while he is admittedly a bad dog, at times he is also very lovable and brings the young girl fluffy friends, sloppy kisses, and chocolate Santas. Readers familiar with Elise Lewis's poem "A Puppy's 12 Days of Christmas" will note similarities. Nevertheless, children will enjoy reading about the trouble the cute canine unintentionally causes. Slightly less enjoyable are the images accompanying the story; while the depiction of the dog matches the sweetness of the text, Kremsner seems less skilled with her portrayal of humans.—Graciela Gallegos, Los Angeles Public Library
