Joyce Kirksey came from a very poor family. She was in and out of children’s and foster homes. She often left homes at an early age—as young as six-years-old. Her sister was abusive; her father went to prison for life and she became a victim of sexual and physical abuse by neighbors.
She had her first job at the age of fourteen, and she met a man named Carl. After six months of dating him, Kirksey discovered he was married. She was pregnant and sad at the loss of Carl
