Mr. Gorney's delightful memoir added a layer of richness to my summer reads pile. Crafted more as poetry than prose, "Mysterious Places" guides the reader through parts of the authors life, with both detailed lived experiences and delightful tales of the past. Mr. Gorney's account of life with his Romanian family is touching, humorous, witty, wise, and relatable. While reading I was transported to memories of my own childhood with my Hungarian grandmother, hanging on to family history and tales from the old country. The harrowing events of the Holocaust described towards the end of the book are painful but compelling. Mr. Gorney's beautiful words and unflinching account of the violence perpetrated serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives or loved ones. In our current political climate, where crimes driven by bigotry are systemically enabled and unfortunately, ever increasing, Mr. Gorney's memoir serves as a warning and inspiration to find strength through heritage.
