Gr 5-8-On a cruise with her father, stepmother, and stepsister, Cassie meets Charles, who is on his way to his grandfather's plantation in Martinique, while attending a lecture on gems and superstitions. The young people are intrigued by a ghost story about an Arawak Indian girl who was captured and killed on the island in 1902. The tragedy of her death, coupled with the disappearance of a jeweled statue, sets the two new friends on a mission to solve the mystery when they dock in Martinique. They are soon caught in a web of lies, subterfuge, and deception surrounding the ancient artifact. The teens find the object, expose a secret in Charles's family, and catch the criminals who had been trying to kill them. Portrayed as either self-involved, out of touch with reality, or evil, the adults have little impact on the events that occur or the outcome, and the simplistic characters and contrived situations strike an unbelievable chord.
